Colonize the Moon and own it!

If a country were to colonize the moon, that is set up a permanent colony of a certain size could they own it? The Newtster, and maybe China and Russia think so in spite of an earlier treaty.

Is it cooler up there? Maybe I'll volunteer to be a colonist... :D

The race for the Republican presidential nomination is about to blast off into outer space: Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich announced that, if elected, he'd establish a colony on the moon by 2020.

In a speech to supporters on the Florida space coast, Gingrich called for a "grandiose" effort to colonize space. "It's the second great launch of the adventure John F. Kennedy started," said Gingrich.

Gingrich opened up the possibility of the moon becoming the 51st state, something he believes could happen once a permanent settlement reaches a population of 13,000 Americans. While a 1967 United Nations document says that no one country can claim sovereignty over the moon, the U.S., Russia, and China failed to sign a more recent U.N. treaty to settle the question of who owns the moon.

The bold move hopes to boost the former speaker's presidential campaign in the Sunshine State, where space exploration remains a big industry. Florida will hold its GOP presidential primary vote on Tuesday, January 31. Polls show the race is close.

Wouldn't surprise me if the US tried it!

They seem determined to trample over anything and everything that is not theirs, without regard for others.

I agree with Paul, but I would replace "some" with "all" as I think the world would be better off without any of them.

I only watched a very small part of the Republican candidates debate, but did they spend all their time trying to blacken the reputation of the others, or did they put forward any proper proposals. And another thing, how could anyone vote for someone called Newt or Mitt?

Yeah!!!! After they voted for someone named Obama when we were involved in two mid east wars!!!! :P :P :P :shock:

That is normal for the debates, then when the candidate is chosen, all comments forgotten.

They're really digging up the dirt on Mr. Moon now. He'll distance himself from it, but people will retain the thoughts. Pete :cheers:

Newt like Kennedy? How do they keep a straight face?

It's obviously important to be the first to establish a Casino and Titty Bars on the Moon, so I wouldn't criticize Newt for wanting to be a good planetary mobster and not just an earthly one. Adelson wants a piece of the action and his racketeering stimulates a moribund economy and provides jobs and entertainment for all those folk with robo-robbed homes, prostitutes, human traffickers and their ancillary industries. Titty bars, like Sugar Daddies, are as American as Apple Pie.

Where Newt's Kennedy-like interest in the lunar landscape is more questionable, is with his choice of partners. To my surprise Newt's loyalty may not just be to my favourite alien race, the Israelis but to another Alien tribe known as the 'Gringcons'. I hear Leonard Nimmoy is being resurrected from his casket to play a cameo.

Don't stare into Newt's wife's eyes in that first photo... it will hypnotize you and make you do crazy things! :shock:
