Traffic Light Camera???
Traffic Light Camera???
I've just been watching some guy setting up an unusual camera at the Tessebahn lights. It was not your everyday 'tourist snap' camera. He seemed to be waiting for the lights to turn red, and was then snapping those driving through red, and being Thailand he was quite busy.
Looks as though Santa has bought the BIB a new revenue collection device for Christmas.
Just thought I'd let people know he was about.

These types of camera typically have a sensor coil imbedded in the road, about two to three inches deep. If you look carefully you can see where they would have gouged a trench and then backfilled over it, about the size of a car.
It only triggers the camera if you run a red light.
So if you don't run a red, you won't get your picture taken..

This is Thailand - that sounds like sophistication. This was being operated by a mark 1 eyeball, and an index finger.

Re: Traffic Light Camera???
Probably just setting up focus and camera angle.. The BIB don't like to be out in the hot sun or any other inclement weather, those airconditioned booths they have on the corner of the traffic lights are probably about as close as they want to be to the action.

I saw him too! He had the camera on a monopod/tripod and since it was drizzling he had a white cloth over it. I thought it was a tourist.
Re: Traffic Light Camera???
If it was a tourist, it was a very sophisticated camera for taking photos of traffic.

Re: Traffic Light Camera???
Hmm, not sure you have that right, Vincent. Automated traffic lights do have a sensing coil buried in the road to operate the lights, but I have yet to see one in Thailand. The coil is buried in the road, and if installed after the road was built, a small "slot" is cut using a machine like a friction cut off wheel used to cut metal, and then sealed over.VincentD wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2017 10:57 am These types of camera typically have a sensor coil imbedded in the road, about two to three inches deep. The traffic lights in Thailand are either controlled by a timer, or operated manually. This stupid method is a big contributor to traffic jams in Bangkok, where Somchai decides to have him a "convoy"!
Either way, a camera can be simply synchronised with each red light cycle and usually includes a motion sensor if just a snap shot is required. Multinova type speed cameras use a similar method, and I have seen these in Thailand. When triggered they take 5 or 6 shots in rapid succession, and remain static until triggered by what ever speed set point is set.
(I believe that you have a naughty device that can detect these things?)
If this camera is indeed a "red light" camera it is just another example of the twisted logic, where they mount the thing right outside the police station!

Re: Traffic Light Camera???
I think you are right when you say, "take 5 or 6 shots in rapid succession." However, I think that's where the sophistication ended i.e. it was triggered manually.
The main victims yesterday seemed to be the ones taking the free left turn when the lights were red. This is one of the areas where it is marked no free left turn exists. Every time somebody approached the lights with left indicator flashing, the guy moved to his camera. Yes, he was active snapping the mandatory 5 or 6 vehicles not stopping at red, but outside of that, it was definitely the left turners. I'd reckon the camera will pay for itself in a week on left turners alone.

Re: Traffic Light Camera???
Maybe, but they have to collect the fines first! Cannot find it just now, but read somewhere how many fines are not paid. It seems the only way that they can enforce them is to withhold renewing the registration / tax next time it is due.I'd reckon the camera will pay for itself in a week on left turners alone.
But again, it is typical logic to enforce the left turn rule, when there are thousands of intersections where it is posted a left turn is not only legal, but is compulsory!

Re: Traffic Light Camera???
More than 500 motorists were caught running red lights at 30 intersections in Bangkok on Sunday, the first day the so-called red-light camera system went into operation, according to police.
A total of 538 motorists jumped red lights at the busy intersections where the cameras were installed despite signs warnings motorists that they were there.
The cameras photograph all the vehicles that jump red lights, which leads to tickets being posted directly to offenders' homes.
Once a picture of an offender's vehicle and their licence plate is captured, police check the vehicle registration details with the Department of Land Transport.
After that, tickets are issued and sent through the post to the address specified on an offenders' vehicle registration form.
Offenders can log on to the website for more information about the traffic violation. The log-on password is the serial number printed on their tickets.
Of the offenders caught by the cameras between midnight and 3pm on Sunday, 269 were snapped at the Ratchadaphisek-Rama IV intersection, followed by 78 at the Asok-Phetchaburi intersection.
While violators face a fine of up to 1,000 baht, the Royal Thai Police has decided to collect only 500 baht from each offender although they are subject to a deduction of points on their licence.
If too many marks are deducted, drivers may see their licence suspended.
Deputy chief of the Metropolitan Police Bureau Pol Maj Gen Chirasan Kaewsangaek said he believed the warning signs and a public relations campaign on good driving behaviour will help reduce the number of red-light jumpers.
He noted a substantial drop in red-light offenders, from 948 on Saturday to 538 the following day when the cameras became operational.
"The equipment will only catch drivers who pass over the stop line at an intersection," Pol Maj Gen Chirasan said.
The camera is designed to capture an offender's licence plate with optimum clarity by employing a 12-megapixel high-resolution camera.
The equipment is also fitted with an infrared system, thereby enabling it to capture offenders clearly at night and also during bad weather conditions, police said

Re: Traffic Light Camera???
But no fines will be issued yet as the system continues to be checked.
However from the 20th motorists can expect to get fines through the post and points on their licences, reported Siam Rath.

“Offenders can log on to the website for more information about the traffic violation. The log-on password is the serial number printed on their tickets.”
Does anyone know what website this is ? I’d like to log in and see if there are any outstanding tickets issued against my car.

How would you log in without the ticket number?Scout wrote:“Offenders can log on to the website for more information about the traffic violation. The log-on password is the serial number printed on their tickets.”

Re: Traffic Light Camera???
Probably can’t, but I’d still like to find the website just to see if there’s an option to look up tickets by license plate number.
