All public transports are to be equipped with GPS

Post by Big Boy »

All public transport except trucks are to be equipped with GPS within next year, said Transport Minister Omsin Chivapruek on Thursday.
The minister presided over the launch of GPS for use in the management and tracking of public transport during the Songkran festival.

Mr Omsin said that the GPS would enable officials of Land Transport Department keep track of the driving behavior of drivers of public transport. It will also enable passengers to examine the safety of public transports such as buses through DLT GPS application.

As a result of the above, there could be a shortage public buses in the Bangkok area over Songkran.
Meanwhile, transport officials have expressed concern that a large number of Songkran revelers may be stranded in Bangkok because of the shortage of public buses after some bus operators warned that they may not operate during the period due to what they allege as unrealistic road safety measures such as the mandatory installation of GPS system on all public buses.

It can track and pinpoint location apparently but what other good does it do? Does it record speed and hours driven by the operator? If it doesn't or similar, seems like much ado about nothing. Pete

Much do about nothing except for the massive cost of installation. Are there enough devices available for every vehicle?

I certainly hope it does. Way too many kamikaze Formula 1 bus and taxi drivers in this country.

It's really sad that there are so many Thai's whose only marketable skill is knowing how to drive a car.
The number of taxi's on the road here in Thailand needs to be reduced by 30-40%, and Thai people need to get a higher education or more marketable skills that contribute and benefit this country in greater and better ways.
