the real hope is my youngest (22) daughter's generation. especially the females. many are well educated, have started travelling abroad, are curious about the world and ambitious. my eldest daughter (32) just returned from her first trip abroad (3 weeks in Holland) and is like a new person. her attitude toward everything is different; more open, wanting to learn more, more outspoken and wanting to be part of a new Thailand. sometimes a western influence is good. once people see the possibilities and what is available elsewhere they want it too and the intelligent ones will work for it. we can talk forever but nothing replaces experience. what's that old song? oh, "How you gonna keep em down on the farm after they've seen paree?"

These are all longer term policies. I still maintain policing it properly, with real deterrents is the only thing that will work. At the moment, there is no deterrent except being maimed or killed. If that happens, it's because they were wearing the wrong amulet.

In my accident where the motorcyclist drove under the wheels of my truck, the police were not interested in the fact he didn't have a licence, didn't have insurance, didn't wear a helmet. The accident was declared 50/50 to ensure my insurance would pay for the damage to my car.

I'm sure that as soon as he could walk again, the young lad would have continued riding motorcycles with no licence, insurance or helmet. There was no real suggestion that he had done anything wrong :cuss:

we are drifting off-topic but into a more interesting area than traffic.
These young people are going to have a real up-hill struggle, the older generation will not only not encuorage them but will block any efforts and punish them for suggesting change.
One of my favourite lines of poetry is from Kipling-- the great poet of the old British Empire "What knows he of England that only England knows" The more young Thais trael abroad the more they will learn about their own country.

So start the more interesting area as a new topic. :offtopic:

If anything, this topic about road use/safety, the situation might just get worse rather than better with Thailand's version of Generation Snowflake taking to the roads.

I'm continually curious about the idea of policing before education.

How does one enforce something that does not exist in the mind of the masses they have never been educated on it?

Sat in front of a viewing screen showing them the answers to the exam, just before taking the exam.

You and I both know the uselessness of rote memorization or cramming before an exam just to get a passing grade. Little if any information is retained long term.

Education will take years, the problem is today. It has got out of control - how many more have to die while we're politically correct, and educate everybody :banghead:

You're correct, but its already been proven that enforcement isn't going to happen. Whereas education is currently being pushed, albeit not on the scale it needs to be.

A large number don't have a licence. Too much trouble.

Police it properly, and they would soon learn and start getting them. If it's going to save lives, what better education?

Send them to school for years, it won't make any difference - it will still be too much trouble to get one. Make the punishment harsh, and they'll soon be bothered.

^^ Thailand would need to form a police force. Or maybe just a traffic police force would suffice.

Other countries have continuous road traffic education using advertising slots on TV. Why couldn't DLT do the same during the nightly lakorns when the audiences are at peak?

:agree:
Thailand is still a very 'lawless' country, and the U.S. and many other western countries are very 'Rule of Law' and there is a very large Law Enforcement presence in most of the U.S. and they are trained to aggressively enforce the law.
It's really a cultural problem that Thai people have and it is sad.
You really have to drive defensively when on the roads here in Thailand and even embrace the chaos a little bit.
