Need a longer term car rental

Post by writebrian »

The wife and I just arrived last week and plan on staying 6 months maybe a year. I am interested in a car rental but unsure if it's better to go the private owner route or use a proper car rental company. Are private rentals perfectly legal in the eyes of authorities? Any pros or cons of either that stand out to you?

I'm looking to spend 10-12,000 baht monthly and not really particular about make and model as long as it's in good repair and AC works well.

Any advice in the subject appreciated. I'm sure I will have many more questions in many more topics in the coming days weeks. But so far we love Hua Hin!

Those look like really nice vehicles, but the prices are more then I can afford. Is this company a site sponsor? Are there any others who may have less expensive vehicles?

Most rental places would charge 800+ baht per day. So 30 days = 24,000 with a long term discount perhaps 20,000. I don't know of anywhere but if you can find a local place with older cars you may be lucky to get a cheaper price. Best of luck.

Thanks for that information. What is the best source for finding private cars for hire? I know for housing you just look for signs on the streets you're interested in. What about vehicles?

If you are still looking for a vehicle let me know, and I'll ask a mate of mine if he is interested, and if he is, how much he wants.

Contact Avis, Budget or Hertz head offices in Bangkok and ask for a minimum of 6 months rent and I guess you can get one monthly for 10-15K included insurance.

Still looking. I tried Avis today 17,900 baht is their best long term rate for Toyota Vios. Better than what I found so far, but still would like cheaper.

You can easily find a small car for 12-14 per month from local business people. Try going along soi 102 and ask in each shop if they know where you can rent a car. You will be surprised.

The caveats of renting from a person instead of a car rent company should be obvious.

Also consider buying a second hand car instead, if you're really staying for 6-12 months. It can save you a bundle.
