Some time ago, they wouldn't renew your licence until it had expired. I tried to renew my first licence a week before it expired and was sent away. That was some 15 years ago so things will have changed. As has been said before, if you wait till one day after your birthday then the renewal is 5 years from your next birthday.

I’ve just renewed my 5 year car and m/cycle licenses this morning at the Cha Am office - first thing was that they do not accept the yellow book on its own, I had to go to one of the municipality offices nearby to get a letter confirming the yellow book was current/valid - at a cost of 10 baht!!

Back to the license office, they didn’t want copies of the old driving licenses just the originals, with copies of passport/visa page. Color blind test, reaction test and then told to go upstairs and watch a one hour video. One of the office people came in and started talking to everybody in Thai - I assumed this was a 5-10 minute pep talk, but it went on and on for more than an hour and 15 minutes - I was becoming totally p*******d off by this time, assuming I had still to watch the 1 hour video when finally he said “ok finished” and no video. Other than a complete waste of an hour and 15 minutes for me and the other 2 westerners (assuming they were not fluent in Thai), I sensed that the man was really giving the Thai people a hard going over about the need to obey the traffic laws - hopefully some of what he was saying would have rubbed off on them!!

Did you require a medical note for the renewal

No if you already have a 5 year license, a medical certificate is not required

So it seems that the ignorant creature and her pet clown are still delighting people at Cha Am!
