Why do some farang not wear motorcycle helmets?
Re: Why do some farang not wear motorcycle helmets?
This is a link to an earlier thread where helmet wearing was discussed.

Some people do not wear helmets because they are idiots no matter where they
might be. I have only had two motorcycle accidents and both times my helmet has
saved my life. Thailand is no different.

Same, same but different - there are quite a few people riding bicycles in the Soi 94 area at the moment - I haven't seen 1 cycle helmet being worn. Same skull, same road surface, same result if the unthinkable happens - not sure if cyclists will be covered by holiday insurance, but worth a check i.e. it may be available, but at a supplement.

It is quite unusual seeing adult cyclists without a helmet, which is probably why I noticed it. It just seems to have started in the last week or 2.

Re: Why do some farang not wear motorcycle helmets?
Whenever I've been out in my car or on my bicycle, nearly every Thai cyclist I see riding a bicycle wears a helmet - I'm talking the more serious rider than the social rider like myself. It always amazes me that almost without exception these type of riders will wear a helmet, whereas the Honda biker will be 30-50% (on a good day).
Re: Why do some farang not wear motorcycle helmets?
I agree with DB re: the helmets, but I've noticed that the Thais riding expensive-looking racing bikes (and wearing all the flash
clothing) on the P/kasem at dusk quite often don't have any lights.
Maybe that's why they're wearing helmets... ?!

What's with all the hate on Thai helmets? Do you have any evidence at all that helmets sold in Thailand are insufficient to protect the head in a crash?Big Boy wrote:My son had a Thai helmet = quality unknown. He had a small accident, and banged his head - thankfully the helmet took the punishment. I made him buy a new helmet the next day.
I'm very happy with my space crown.
There's actually a strong debate going about whether bicycle helmets increase or decrease the risk of injury. There is evidence that cyclists without helmets get into fewer and less serious accidents.Big Boy wrote:Same, same but different - there are quite a few people riding bicycles in the Soi 94 area at the moment - I haven't seen 1 cycle helmet being worn. It must be pretty isolated in the expat circle-jerk if you think anyone who disagrees about anything is a trollHHTel wrote:Never mind the 'trolls', don't feed the 'sloths'

If you knew anything about crash helmet construction, you would realise that most Thai helmets are built down to the lowest cost, and do not offer any reasonable protection
That is why most serious motorcyclists pay from 250 - 500 euro for good protection; eg Shoei, Arai, Shark.
When the first full-face helmets came into Europe from Bell, their advertising slogan was:
"If you have a $10 head, wear a $10 helmet"
At the time Bell helmets were about $50 equivalent.

Sid, you stick with your 200 baht helmet, apparently it is the same value as your head!

Re: Why do some farang not wear motorcycle helmets?
Interesting comments on helmet quality.
In the US any helmet that meets DOT standards must be replaced after each accident, regardless of the severity of the accident. Unless of course you don't bang your crown at all.
There are a lot of non-certified helmets available in the US too.
Its not uncommon for insurance companies not to pay up if you're not wearing a DOT certified helmet in a state that requires them.
