Hua Hin hotels raise awareness at 'helmet extravaganza'
FOURTEEN LEADING hotels and resorts in Hua Hin jointly held an event to raise awareness about motorcycle safety among Thai schoolchildren.
"It is a worrying fact of life in Thailand - and in many Asian countries - that many children do not wear helmets when travelling on motorcycles with their parents," Goetz Bauer, general manager of the Hua Hin Marriott Resort & Spa explained.
Figures showed that less than 7 per cent of Thai children wear helmets when riding on motorbikes with their parents. This means that every day more than 93 per cent of Thai children across the country are risking their lives while travelling to and from school.
In order to address this alarming statistic, 14 of Hua Hin's top hotels joined forces recently to organise the "Helmet Extravaganza" - a CSR event aimed at saving the lives of young people in Hua Hin and Prachuap Khiri Khan Province.
Hotels taking part in the initiative included Hyatt Regency Hua Hin, Hua Hin Marriott Resort & Spa, Hilton Hua Hin Resort & Spa, Sheraton Hua Hin Resort & Spa, InterContinental Hua Hin, Anantara Hua Hin Resort & Spa, Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin, Dusit Thani Hua Hin, Chiva-Som International, Putahracsa Hua Hin, SO Sofitel Hua Hin, G Hua Hin Resort & Mall, Banyan The Resort Hua Hin, and Amari Hua Hin.

So forgive my skepticism but apart from the publicity garnered for the hotels involved, what did this event actually achieve to raise helmet awareness for the masses who are unlikely ever to be able to afford a decent helmet let alone buy a meal at any of these hotels.
It sounds like there are good intentions and I am not aware of the outcome of this extravaganza other than the article but ......

If it's the campaign I'm thinking of, it happened a few weeks ago, and they were giving quality helmets to kids.
Or maybe this is another, similar campaign.

These events achieve absolutely nothing, just like the picking up trash on Hua Hin's beaches events achieve absolutely nothing. It's all about the 'face concept' here in Thailand and the culture here needs to change radically.Gregjam wrote:So forgive my skepticism but apart from the publicity garnered for the hotels involved, what did this event actually achieve to raise helmet awareness for the masses who are unlikely ever to be able to afford a decent helmet let alone buy a meal at any of these hotels.

It's just non-stop BS BS and more BS here.

How negative . There is a public spirited desire to help. We know they can do nothing about the poor standard of policing. What alternatives do you suggest they employ to raise awareness?

And I thought I was being negative. However futile doing something is better than nothing. My point was more that it struck me as a publicity stunt riding on a genuine need for something substantial to be done however unlikely.
Kids size helmets are not common (proper ones anyway) and even if there was sufficient supply the people who most need them are unlikely to be able to buy them. Just finng for non use only encourages corruption. The only way I could see it happening would be if there was some incentive (again at risk of being subject to corruption).
You cannot compare the situation here with western societies where motorcycling is mainly a leisure activity on bigger bikes and enforcement is not just a word so commuters comply with the law. I don't know how to fix this and suspect it is just another issue to be placed in the "sort it out later" box along with vehcle inspections, drivers licences etc etc.
Another one of those TIT aspects of living here, still preferable for me to the alternative.

Re: Hua Hin hotels raise awareness at 'helmet extravaganza'
Most businesses allocate money and time to charitable causes. Generally it is win/win in that some deserving causes get help and the business gets publicity. Perhaps the HuaHin Forum would like to join in and ask members for a donation to enable some quality helmets to be donated to school children. The publicity would be helpful as I'm surprised how few Farangs have heard of the Forum.
Re: Hua Hin hotels raise awareness at 'helmet extravaganza'
Nothing was achieved? Over 1000 children's helmets were donated to school kid's, potentially saving their life if they wear them....Name Taken wrote:These events achieve absolutely nothing
That's why over 1000 helmets were donated, because they are unlikely to afford them.Gregjam wrote:So forgive my skepticism but apart from the publicity garnered for the hotels involved, what did this event actually achieve to raise helmet awareness for the masses who are unlikely ever to be able to afford a decent helmet let alone buy a meal at any of these hotels.

It is great that a thousand helmets were donated and if one life is saved due to wearing one it was worth it.
I sincerely hope the recipients are using them but perhaps I have been here too long and suspect most will gather dust after little use.

I remember growing up (most of it) and when seat belts came out regularly. No one I knew wore one. Over the years with safety campaigns, and laws, now most people would not think about going out without them on. For the younger generation that is all they know.
