What's the actual fine for no license? It won't do me any good to get an international license bc my license is only good for cars not bikes bc the bikes in the states are much bigger than here and require a special license. I will get my Thai license once I get my non B visa but it will be maybe another month before I can do that. In Chiang Mai they just want a bribe around 400 baht but will try and take you for more but will also settle for whatever you have on hand. I would purposely only have a couple hundred baht for this reason but managed to miss the stops. I was just wondering if it was the same here or not until I can get my Thai license. TIA

The fine for Thais is 200 baht, last I checked.

Get an international license though. The fellas here have no idea how to read the thing, they just want to see it and your photo on it. I've been driving on an international car-only license for years now (Geko and other moaners, save your breath/keystrokes), and they let me go with a smile every time.

What happens of you are involved in a serious accident? Insurance not valid? Is it worth it?

My travel insurance actually covers me regardless of whether I have a license or not. This has been tested (not by me, fortunately).

You can get an international license in Prachuap: http://www.dlt.go.th/en/international-driving-licence/

But it looks like you need a Thai license before hand according to that page.

It is officially only valid for one year so a 5 year one is probably a scam.

But surely, you need a real license before they'll issue you an International licence. If you have a real licence, why get the International licence? It's easy enough to transfer to a Thai licence.

On my last International licence, authority to drive a motorcycle was clearly scored out.

I doubt this very much. Get a license and don't be foolish

From what I remember the 'international licence' is only a translation of your Ferang licence, at least that's the case from the UK.

The international license I got in the states (from AAA) is a small booklet with a few pages. Most of it is standard language, what countries participate. At the end is my picture and stamps showing a license for auto and motorbike.

I assume you were licenced for both in the States as well.

Here's the relevant section of my last International licence - the motorcycle bit does not have a stamp:

Without being pedantic, or a smart arse, the document is NOT a licence. It is a "permit".

Most other countries also issue them, usually via the local automobile association.
