I would appreciate some advice on insurance for a Honda PCX 150. When purchased it came with one year insurance, now at one year old I just renewed the annual tax and this came with a small envelope which my Thai wife says is personal accident insurance, not vehicle insurance. She says this is all anyone has for small bikes, I just cant believe this, who would pay for damage to my PCX or worse still if I hit an expensive car.
Any advice is very appreciated.

Re: Scooter Insurance
The envelope is the government mandatory CTPL insurance. It does not cover any damage to your scooter and the payout is low - something like 15,000 baht to the driver and 50,000 baht per injured person. You really need to get a decent insurance policy to give you more cover for injuries to yourself, third party's and damage to other vehicles or property. These also come with a bail bond incase you are arrested and detained.
Re: Scooter Insurance
AFAIK the only company providing third party insurance for motorbikes is Southeast Insurance on the corner of Phetskasem road and 88/1 right close to Pairat Clinic and about 50 meters south from Market Village.
The annual premium is dependent on cc's of the bike and I'd imagine it would be about 1 800 THB/a for a Honda POX 150.

I was quoted around 6,000 baht for my PCX.
I have taken out theft insurance for it which was 1,700 Baht for 2 years.

Re: Scooter Insurance
A decent First Class insurance at a good company for a new PCX is around 4,500 baht a year.
This will not only cover the Third Party bodily Injury/death and property damage, but also our own PCX for fire/theft and own damage and includes Bail Bond coverage. Available at AA Insurance Brokers Co.,Ltd (aka http://www.huahinmedia.com/insureinthailand.php)

That sounds like a very good deal.

Re: Scooter Insurance
Wrong - Numerous companies insure scooters, AA have quoted me 4.6k for 1st class insurance. I also have two others which are higher.Farang wrote:AFAIK the only company providing third party insurance for motorbikes is Southeast Insurance on the corner of Phetskasem road and 88/1 right close to Pairat Clinic and about 50 meters south from Market Village.

To me the big risk is serious injury and damage to someone else's vehicle. Can you imagine the cost if you are at fault for major damage to a Mercedes, it could run into Millions of Baht
I can just imagine how many vehicles are on Thailand's roads with only basic government CTPL insurance, it's scary.

Explains why the phrase 'the driver(rider) fled the scene' is used a lot here. I would thoroughly recommend AA insurance as not only are they competitive they are also good and look after customers. A friend who lives in Chiang Mai uses them for his big bike which indicates how competitive they are.
