I think it's very hard to make any conclusions about change in these statistics without having a figure of actual road usage on the days in question. For instance, April 11th was a Monday this year and a Saturday last year so that must have an influence on how many vehicles are on the road with respect to normal usage and also which days people are traveling home for the holidays.

I read a BBK Post article today and I think it said 81 thousand arrested for DUI (Driving Under the Influence) in the space of 5 days....WTF and something like 40 thousand unable to produce a license.

It would just not be acceptable in most other places. Not to mention that 400-500 people being killed over a holiday is akin to a jumbo jet going down everytime they have a festival.

To be rated 2nd in the world to Libya in danger listings for road safety is just an embarrassement.

I have plenty of positive things to mention about living here, however, this silly-ass situation isn't one of them.

The sad fact is, that it's a jumbo jet equivalent killed each and every week.

Arrests for DUI and no licence whilst they are ridiculous numbers to anyone from the West,
the more the MIB stop, the more tea money they earn. :guns:
Songkran and Xmas, is the time they fill their coffers, to see them through the lean months. It has always been like this.
Spoke to FIL (ex cop) on this subject this morning, he just shrugged his shoulders and said TIT, drink and drugs and driving is almost the National pastime. Seems he, like many Thais are immune to the carnage on the roads, it's gone on for so many years now.
Will the Thais learn anything from these figures, I very much doubt it.

Hi All

if you take the WHO number of deaths on Thailand's roads of 24237 and split the difference with the Thai government figure of 14059 you get 19148 road deaths per year, a reasoned average. This equates to 368 deaths per week,
It would appear that the Songkran time of year is not that much of an aberration.

Regards

The end. I'm always suspicious of fiddled numbers when we see a steady decrease in the last three days after a large increase in the first 4. But, that's just me.

"Thailand's New Year festivities log a record high deaths on the road

Thailand suffered a record high of 397 deaths in the first six days of its New Year's festival of Songkran, the Thai transport minister, Arkhom Termpittayapaisit, said on Sunday.

The death toll represents a 30% rise over last year's count across the weeklong festival, with Sunday still unaccounted for during the minister's press conference. A total of 3,104 traffic collisions had occurred, resulting in 3,271 people seriously injured. ..."

"Thailand literally wants to send drunk drivers to the morgue

Drunk drivers in Thailand might be forced to face their mortality, if they don't get the message soon.

Thai authorities have recommended that offenders start adding time at hospital morgues to their community service punishment, in order to show them the consequences of drunk driving. ..."

Do they have enough morgues to cater for all of Thailand's drink drivers?
