Dashboard Glare

Post by PeteC »

Anyone found a solution for this? I'm not talking about driving directly into the sun, but normal daylight where the dashboard reflects up and is semi-visible in the windshield. I have number 40 film on the windshield, and I guess this could exacerbate the problem although it was never a problem in other models with same.

I find this very distracting and I guess it could be dangerous in some circumstances.

They used to sell dashboard carpets in the old days but I doubt available here, and would probably block the passenger side airbag anyway.

Any suggestions welcome. Thanks Pete

Have you tried polarising lenses in your glasses/sunglasses or is it even possible to buy polarising film? This would have the potential to minimise or eradicate the reflection altogether, if my physics serves me correctly. :|

My Hilux came with the carpet you mention above. To be honest, coming from a country where sun glare is rarely a problem, until you posted that I was never aware what it was actually for.
It has a cutout for the passenger airbag.

My old use occasionally Isuzu pickup also has a dashboard mat. Motor trimmers / upholstery shop should be able to knock one up for you if not an aftermarket item.

Thanks for all the tips. There is a ton to read on the internet as apparently this is a big problem with many vehicles. I'm going to start by removing any substance on there such as "Armor All" as that can cause the problem entirely as the shine/reflection can be extreme. Will take the next step if needed after that.

The windshield "rake angle' is also a big factor and that has become more extreme due to manufacturer's desire to make more aerodynamic vehicles.

I think it's going to be difficult finding a dash mat here that fits, therefore I may take Nereus's suggestion, or use a bar mat  Pete

I got the same problem with our new Vios. A dash matt would be ideal.

I've found another way as well. Come to find that what I have is not polarized film. Apparently a change to this will eliminate the problem completely. Have not priced it out yet though. I can't imagine it would be too much as windscreen only, I don't care what's on the side and rear. Pete

See above post. ^ Further, I've come to find that the car manufacturer designates and in some cases sends the film to be used directly to the dealer. As it's an included cost, I imagine the film is not the best quality. Or.....the dealer cheats and uses cheaper film and pockets whatever difference the car manufacturer sends them to buy and install this included option.

Either way, unless you're up there with the top range of cars (BMW, Volvo, Merc, Lexus etc) I imagine none of the film the others use is polarized....IMO. Pete
