New DeLorean to go into Production
"New US legislation means that American-based specialist now has the green light to produce brand new DeLorean DMC-12s.
US-based DeLorean specialist, known as the ‘DeLorean Motor Company’ has announced that it is working on putting the iconic DMC-12 back into production, after recent changes in the regulations have made such a venture possible.
Production will be limited to around 300 units, and the company is currently looking at a possible 2017 launch. The DeLorean Motor Company has been one of the leading specialists in the world of DeLoreans for more than 20 years, and currently owns the huge stockpile of spare parts left over from the original production run.
The company, based in Humble, Texas, has been able to build a new DeLorean from old parts, but there has been strong demand for a modernised version of the iconic DMC-12.
In December 2015, a new ‘Low Volume Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Act’ was written into US law, which makes it possible for smaller companies such as this to produce small runs of vehicles without the need to go through the full approval process.
It’s not a free pass to build anything though. The new law still requires up to date emissions standards, which will mean borrowing a drivetrain from a big manufacturer. This means that the new models will most likely be brought up to date under the skin.
While DeLorean has been working on making this a possibility for some time, the company states that there’s still a long way to go, with ‘a number of hurdles’ to jump before anything can happen."
