Obtaining proof of residence letter for Thai driving license renewal

Post by Bilbo52 »

My first (1 yr) Thai driving licenses for car and motorcycle expire next month. I am fairly comfortable with the process as a whole, but would like to check on the process and cost of getting the two (one for each drving license) residency certs that are required.

Last year when getting my first licenses I went to the Immigration office with the Blue (?) book relating to the condo that I rent from a mate and a letter from him indicating that I rent the property. I paid 800 bt for the two letters.

Shortly after I was talking to my mate's thai wife and she said that the residency letter should have been free of charge.

My question is does any one have recent experience of the driving license renewal process (I plan to go to the Cha am transport office as I did before) and the process and cost of getting the residency letters. For example do I have to go to the Immigration office or can I go to a police station and how much should I expect to pay?

Many thanks,
Bill

The residency letter is free if you get it done at the police station (maybe not so in Hua Hin though). If you go to immigration they will charge 500 baht for it.

I just got such a letter from immigration - 500 Bt. I've never heard of anyone in HH getting that letter from the police station.

If you got to immigration - and I'm pretty sure you will need to do just that - you no longer go into the main office to have this done. As you face the office there is a small building 30//40 meters off to the left and around to the back side of it that you will need to go.

There's one benefit of having a Yellow Book, as they will accept that as proof of residence when renewing your licence - at least they do at the Cha Am driving licence centre.

Go to immigration, you will pay 500 Bt. for each (car+motocycle) and you will be satisfied. Before opening of immigration in Hua Hin, I got at police station. Stay away of this m..... they will ask you money or a bottle of Black Label.

But you still need a proof of address either as a yellow book or a certificate from immigration.

When I went, the main office told me to go to 'The Box'. Took a while to get what they meant.

I got a letter from the police station in HH - took about 5 mins. I wasn't sure if any money changed hands but my wife reckons she paid 500 Baht to the officer. The driving licence office in Pranburi accepted it with no questions.
