Permits needed to travel in SE Asia on m/bike

I'm planning to take some weeks to travel around Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos etc. What permits do I need to ride a m/bke over these borders?

I've ridden in Cambodia and Vietnam on a Thai license and never been questioned.

Unlike here, where there are packs of them waiting to shake down motorcyclists, you rarely see cops over the borders.

You don't need any paperwork for the bike to cross the borders?
Unlike taking a car into Malaysia where your number plate has to be romanised and proof of insurance.

Ah, yes you do, but I hired bikes in country so not sure whats involved exactly with that. Maybe someone else can help.

I've been to Vietnam, Cambodia & Laos last year and loved it. SEA is truly the land of motorbikes as this is the major means of transportation. In SEa, you even dont need a license (dont try to break the traffic law or the police will stop you, lol).
