International Driver's License - Where, how fast?
International Driver's License - Where, how fast?
Leaving Thailand soon and would like to get the international driver's license before I go (I have a Thai license). I know this can be done in Bangkok, but I'm having a hard time figuring out the details. Has anybody done this? Is it a simple process: walk in, walk out with the paper a while later? Any idea of cost and what papers I need to take with me?
Oh, and where is it.
Thanks.

I never knew anybody try to get a real one, the fakes are about 500b, nice job too.

As far as I know, the fakes ones say something different, so I think officials abroad might be able to tell. Where do you get the fake one?

I've done a bit of a trawl around Google, and I think (not sure) you need to go to a Land Transport Office http://driving-in-thailand.com/land-tra ... -thailand/

If people want to buy fake goods, then that is their choice, I personally do not, but a fake drivers license, well that is despicable.

I don't think they have that, actually. I'm pretty sure they only sell fake stuff for other countries, not for Thailand.

No. What I need is the international driving license for Thailand. I have a 5-year Thai license already. But the international Thai thing is still a Thai document. I know it can be done in Bangkok, but it seems like such a pain to go there for this. I was hoping it could be done locally, but I just called the Prachuap Kirikhan office and they told me I can't do it there, only Bangkok.

Do you need one because you don't have a driving licence in your own country or wherever you're heading to?dotx wrote: No. What I need is the international driving license for Thailand. I have a 5-year Thai license already.
I can only speak about the UK, but you can drive in the UK on a foreign licence for up to 1 year, which is the same expiry as an International Driving Permit, as issued in the UK anyroads.
Or are you heading somewhere that requires an IDP in addition to a Thai driving licence?
Re: International Driver's License - Where, how fast?
The above statement was not true when my son-in-law visited the UK. I checked it out at the time, and an International licence was definitely a requirement. Of course, that was 10 years ago, so things may have changed.

Here's how to find out. No mention of requiring an IDP:Big Boy wrote:The above statement was not true when my son-in-law visited the UK. I checked it out at the time, and an International licence was definitely a requirement. Of course, that was 10 years ago, so things may have changed.

An International Driving "Licence"/Permit is simply a translation of your national driving licence. After years of living overseas, I have a Chinese Licence with a International Driving Permit/Translation.
China doesn't issue International Driving Permits, and I have obtained several in the past from Krascar International Drivers Association http://www.idlicense.com/. These were issued by post from the US to China within 3 weeks. I have driven in the US, Canada, Australia, Europe, Japan and Thailand using this and have never had problems with IDP. If anything was untoward, I am sure it would have been picked up by any one of the major hire car places, or indeed the Aus and UK police after both the buggers have stopped me for speeding...
