Actually, I'd noticed the price go up in Hua Hin 2 days ago, so not really the savings they suggest :?

WITHOUT WARNING, FUEL PRICES RISE TO 3-YEAR HIGH
Steady hikes to oil prices this month have the transport sector jittery and consumers unhappy they’re no longer notified in advance as the cost per liter rose to the highest level in over three years.

After diesel prices increased by more than 2 baht in the past month following a recently announced policy barring advance disclosure of price changes due to antitrust concerns, people are complaining it is meant to leave the public in the dark.

“It has said you can’t announce the increase of oil prices to people in advance,” user Withun Nakornsingh wrote on Facebook. “They’re robbing us silently.”

“The government is no different from a thief, extorting its own people,” wrote Warid Chundee, another user.

The energy office said the change was made to avoid prompting retailers to collude on pricing and diminish competition in possible violation of antitrust laws.

The government’s also warning the transport sector to delay raising prices in response.

But also crude oil is at it's highest price since late 2014. It's easy to blame everything on a heavy-handed government or a non-competing oligopoly.

Government to cap diesel price

The government will cap the diesel price at 30 baht per litre as part of efforts to ease the impact from increasing world oil prices.

The Energy Ministry announced the move Tuesday, saying world oil prices have fluctuated greatly for two months. The price of Dubai crude rose US$15.30 (490 baht) per barrel on Saturday to cost more than $77.

The spike in the crude oil price resulted in the price of diesel in Southeast Asia soaring by about $17 to $93.24 per barrel.

This resulted in the price of diesel in Thailand jumping by 3.82 baht per litre in one day.

"The prime minister [Prayut Chan-o-cha] is very concerned about the impact steady increases in world oil prices have had over the past two months," Energy Minister Siri Jirapongphan said.

As a result, the Energy Ministry will use the State Oil Fund to cap the diesel price at not more than 30 baht per litre until the development of B20 fuel reaches commercial viability. As of Tuesday, the local diesel price had reached 29.79 baht per litre, he said.

B20 is an alternative fuel created by mixing regular diesel, with 20% of biodiesel produced by agriculture products. The selling price of B20 will be 3 baht a litre lower than regular diesel.

In Thailand, diesel is the main fuel for the transport and manufacturing sectors. The higher fuel price will force up the cost of services and production.

Under the scheme to ease fuel price impacts, the State Oil Fund will subsidise 50% of the price increase. For example, if fuel prices increase one baht, the fund will cover 0.5 baht, said Mr Siri.

In the worst-case scenario, if the price of Brent crude reaches $90 per barrel, the diesel price reference in the Southeast Asian market will increase to $105 per barrel. In such a case, the State Oil Fund which remains at 30 billion baht can subsidise the local diesel price at 50% for 10 months, he said.

I think the cap of 30 baht has been in place for some time since the oil prices went crazy some years ago. The government 'takes back the debt' when oil prices come down.

The original cap was revoked when the junta took over. The new cap was announced on Tuesday and expected to be endorsed this week.

Big rise in price of CNG

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

The pump price of compressed natural gas will jump 37% on Thursday evening, to bring it in line with the global oil price, PTT announced on Thursday.

PTT president and chief executive Tevin Vongvanich said the retail price of CNG, marketed as NGV, will rise to 14.58 baht per kilogramme "this evening". He did not specify the exact time.

The new price is a 37% rise on the present price tag of 10.62 baht/kg.
It will not apply to local public buses operated by the Transport Co and the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority, he said.

However, interprovincial buses operating under Transport Co licences, and all other vehicles, will have to pay the new price.

CNG is widely used as an alternative fuel for private vehicles, along with liquified petroleum gas (LPG), and is also used in bi-fuel modified diesel vehicles such as trucks, pickups and public transport. Its price has been partially capped by PTT for almost a decade to help them contain costs.

The wholesale price of CNG used in the transport sector is totally controlled by PTT. Retailers such as Bangchak, Scan Inter and Susco set their own pump prices.

The CNG price increase comes after the rise of crude oil prices in the global market. The rose from US$38 in 2016 to $60 or more this year. Prices of oil and natural gas normally work in tandem.
