"11 School Teachers Reportedly Killed in Thailand Road Crash

A passenger van overturned and caught fire on a highway in Thailand, killing 11 school teachers inside, news reports said Saturday.

The Nation newspaper said the teachers were trapped in the burning vehicle after the Friday night crash on a highway in Chonburi, southeast of Bangkok. The Khaosod newspaper said the victims were school teachers.

The Nation reported the driver lost control after one of the tires of the van burst. It quoted the interior ministry's disaster management department as saying that four people managed to get out of the van before it burst into flames.

Thailand roads are among the world's most dangerous. Speeding and other traffic violations are common and law enforcement on the highways is lax."

Wow the cops really are top investigators, a burnt out van and multiple deaths and the police think it was caused by a flat tyre. How the F... can they determine that?

This week's Thai driving lunacy and carnage collection ...

Reckless bus driver being sought out
The state-run Transport Company is looking for a bus driver who was shown in a widely-shared video clip driving a fully-packed bus with one hand holding a lunch box and the other hand either holding the steering wheel or spooning rice from the box.

There was another bus crash this week at a notorious corner in Si Sawat, Kanchanaburi but for some reason that hasn't been reported.

Bangkok-Chiang Mai bus crash leaves one dead, three missing
One passenger died and three were missing after the bus they were travelling in hit a roadside tree and overturned into a ditch on the Asian Highway in Chai Nat province.

The interprovincial bus belonged to Pornpiriya Tour Co and was on the way from Bangkok to Chiang Mai last night.

Chai Nat police said the accident occurred near Kilometre marker 132 of the highway at about 11.00pm

It was raining at the time of the accident.

Bus driver Prinya Kampa told police that he was driving the bus to Chiang Mai with 23 passengers.

As the bus arrived near Kilometre 132, there was heavy rain.

He then put the brake to slow down the bus.

But the brake locked up, causing the bus to sway and hit a roadside tree before falling into the ditch, he said.

Passing vehicles alerted highway police who later rushed to the scene with rescue team.

19 passengers were pulled out of the partly submerged bus and sent to hospital.

One woman passenger died at the scene, and three others went missing, believed to be underneath the overturned bus.

6 killed, 39 injured in Korat bus-truck crash

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... ruck-crash

NAKHON RATCHASIMA - Six people were killed and 39 others hurt, eight seriously, when a Bangkok-bound interprovincial bus ran through a road divider and crashed head-on into a 10-wheel truck in Sikhiu district in the early hours of Friday.

Police said the driver of the double-decker bus, carrying about 60 passengers from Roi Et’s Phanom Phrai district to Bangkok, lost control in heavy rain. The bus crashed through the road divider and into the path of the oncoming fully loaded truck.

Five people on the bus were killed - the driver and four passengers - and the driver of the truck. Thirty-nine passengers were hurt, eight seriously. They were rushed to two nearby hospitals.

Police said it was raining heavily at the time. The driver might have fallen asleep at the wheel .

33 hurt as pickup hits school bus

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... school-bus

PHETCHABUN - A pickup truck ran into a school bus, slightly injuring 31 students, in Muang district on Monday morning.

A dark blue pickup truck adapted for use as a school bus was hit head-on by a white pickup truck about one kilometre from Wat Wang Chompoo.

Both vehicles were severely damaged and their drivers were rushed to a nearby hospital. All 31 students, ranging from kindergarten to Prathom 6, on the blue pickup were also taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Prida Brutnok, 43, the driver of the school truck, told police he was taking the students from a village on the mountain down to Ban Wang Chompoo School. He was on a downhill curve when hit by the white pickup, which was travelling uphill and trying to overtake another vehicle.
.......................................................................................
31 kids in the pickup! The photo shows it was not only on a hill, but on a sharp bend in the road. I guess the poor bloody kids were packed in that tight it helped save them. Pr****ks that do this type of things with kids should be locked up, no matter how poor they may be. :guns:

2 dead, 20 injured in bus-truck crash on South highway

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... th-highway

NAKHON SI THAMMARAT -- A tour bus bound for Yala's Betong district from Bangkok rammed into the protruding rear of an 18-wheel trailer truck that had run off Highway 41 in Chulabhorn district on Wednesday morning.

The bus driver and one passenger were killed, and about 20 passengers injured, reports said.

The 18-wheel trailer truck, loaded with cement, was heading South when it ran off the highway and into the ditch in the road median, but part of the trailer still projected out onto roadway.

The tour bus was following immediately behind and crashed into the trailer truck's rear end, before also running into the ditch.

I'm guessing that most of the injuries were caused by passengers falling onto other passengers (due to the serious tilt). I'm also guessing that there were no seat belts. It should be mandatory for all passenger-carrying vehicles to have seat belts, and enforce people to belt-up. I was in a van the other day, and it (amazingly!!) had seat belts, so I automatically 'clunk-clicked' before we drove off. When I asked my Thai colleague why she didn't put her belt on, she glanced around and said "Nobody else is...". :?

I've used the airport bus a few times this year, and always belt up. It is amazing how many people get told by the stewardess to belt up, and as soon as the stewardess goes back to sleep, they remove their belts. The majority of the culprits are Europeans, and should know better. Then again, in their home countries, the same people wouldn't dream of going on a motorcycle without a helmet. It's as if when in this country, people turn into rebellious kids, and deliberately shun rules and regulations - I have little sympathy.
