At least 23 people were killed Monday afternoon when a van and truck burst into flames after colliding in the Ban Bueng district of Chonburi province.

The van was traveling from Chanthaburi to Bangkok when it collided at about 2pm with the pickup on Highway No. 344. Both vehicles were engulfed in flames and 23 people died instantly, including passengers and the driver of the van.

Bancha Pannum, a witness at the scene, said he saw the van drive through the intersection, cross several lanes and crash into the truck, which was also full of passengers.

The Bangkok-bound van was carrying 13 people, and the driver might have fallen asleep while driving, according to a preliminary police report.

^ Even by Thai standards that one is a shocker. :( I would think those LPG fuel tanks were involved again. I'll bet the ranch not one safety impact test has ever been performed here to determine safety of those LPG installations. Pete

It is posted here that the van was fitted with CNG. But with an obvious big impact like that, no amount of testing or regulations are going to stop the likelihood of a fire. The post also says the van crossed the dividing road ditch before hitting the pickup. More than likely that it was a blown tyre causing it to swerve across the road.

Where else in the world would 23 people die in a wreck only involving two passenger vehicles?

This must be a Guinness world record for number of deaths in a two passenger vehicle crash...

^ It's now up to 25 dead and 2 survivors. Total occupants; 15 in the van and 12 in the pick-up. It looks to me that the pick-up was not a back seat type, meaning 9-10 in the truck bed. :( Pete

Those two paragraphs around the blue remarks don't add up. And 30,000 unlicensed drivers were allowed to drive on? Hope the authorities achieved something, even if only fatter wallets.

Police point to two theories of fatal Chon Buri crash

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... buri-crash

Cannot copy any of this--more Thai BS.

But the police think either a tyre blew out, or the driver fell asleep. What I cannot understand is how the bloody hell the van crossed the dividing strip without the driver trying to either stop it, or at least keep it straight down the open strip of what appears to be a shallow ditch of the dividing strip.

25 people in a minvan and a pickup (sorry 27 as two survived)......wtf!

Safety first as always here. Although, I guess all those that were in the vehicles thought it was OK or they wouldn't have got in them.

Just moronic, and if the driver had of survived he would have ran off into the rice fields or bush.....only to kindly turn himself in after a day or two.

With many of these mini bus or coach accidents Thais do not complain when the driver is driving like lunatic, they just keep quiet.

I was in a mini bus once near Pattaya and a Farang complained to the driver about the excessive speed and overtaking, the driver stopped the van and made all Farangs get out, Thais even cheered as 3 of us where left behind. However for us a walk was better than being a statistic.

You have obviously not been to India, Pakistan, China, Tajikistan or countless other countries where this is common practice. Even with 10 ton tipper trucks with 100 people in the back.

This is unbelievable! A video of the crash where 25 people were killed was screened earlier on Australian TV news.
I just started watching the news again as I missed most of it earlier. The presenter read out the headlines and the first few frames of the video started, then these paranoid idiots blanked it out!

The police are evidently still trying to work out how it happened, but if screening something like that prevents just one accident, then it will have achieved more than all the police and their roadblocks combined. :banghead:
