Per Google, Surat Thani city to Prachaup Khiri Khan is 357 km and takes 4 h 50 min to drive. Accident at 0630 hours so the kid was driving since 0130 hours approximately. How much you want to bet a full day before setting off and no nap. :banghead:

In this place it's safer to "make merit" at their local Wat and not drive long distance at all. They'll live longer! Pete

EDIT: The Don Sak district is further. Add another 1 hour and 60-70 km to the above.

Driver has seizure, hits motorcyclists, 2 killed

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

PATTAYA -- Two people were killed and 15 others injured when a 44-year-old man suffered a seizure while driving a pickup truck and crashed into motorcycles taking students to school on South Pattaya Road on Monday morning.

Police and rescue workers were called to the accident scene in front of Tukcom Pattaya building about 7am.
They found a damaged pickup, damaged motorcycles and several injured people, mostly students and their parents, lying on the road. Two people were dead. A Pomeranian dog had also been killed, its head cut off.

Police had to surround and usher Akaradej Udomrat, the 44-year-old pickup driver, away from the scene as he was being attacked by angry people.

Appearing completely baffled, Mr Akaradej told police he was driving on the road when he suddenly lost consciousness. Only after he came to did he realise the extent of the wreck he had caused. He told police that he suffers from epilepsy.

Police tested him for alcohol, and the result was negative.

Despite his claims of illness, police said Mr Akaradej would still face legal charges.

Of the 15 injured people, nine were sent to Pattaya Memorial Hospital, four to Pattaya City Hospital, and two to Bangkok Hospital Pattaya. The two dead victims had not been identified. They were taken to Banglamung Hospital.

Chiang Mai songthaew brake failure kills 2 tourists

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

Two tourists from the southern province of Phangnga were killed after their parked "songthaew" taxi slid down a slope in front of Bhubing Rajanives Palace in Chiang Mai’s Muang district on Tuesday morning.

Phuping police station was alerted to the accident at around 11.30am. The rescue team and police found two bodies lying in a pool of blood in front of the songthaew, a converted pick-up truck fitted with two benches and a roof.

The victims were later identified as Kanokporn Thongyiram, 60, and Duangchan Phongdet, 64. La-iead Charoenrat, 75, was injured and rushed to hospital. The songthaew driver Yongyuth Boonlert, 46, suffered scratches.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the unfortunate tourists had travelled along with 35 others from Phangnga with Takua Pa Tour company. The company hired four songthaews to transport the group to tourist attractions around Wat Doi Suthep.

After visiting the Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple, the group toured the Bhubing palace and then reassembled in the parking area in front. The three victims got on the songthaew, which had its handbrake applied and a brick behind one of the tyres.

When the driver removed the brick in preparation to start the engine, the truck started moving downhill. One passenger was able to jump out, but the two others were thrown out and then run over by the vehicle as it plunged down an embankment.

The driver was detained for questioning pending possible legal action.

Three killed, three injured in pickup-motorcycle crash in Prachin Buri
Three people were killed and three others severely injured as a speeding pickup truck crashed into a motorcycle with three pillion riders before then hitting eight vehicles housed in a roadside tent for a used-car dealership in Prachin Buri.

Police said the accident happened at 2am on highway 3079 near the Phra Prom intersection in Tambon Thatoom in Prachin Buri’s Sri Mahapho district. Police said motorcyclist Nikom Rattaprathoom, 20, died at the scene and two others, Parichat Saedan, 17, and Kittithat Chaiyaphum, 20, died in hospital.

The other injured motorcyclist was unidentified. The four were riding on the same bike. The pickup was driven by Chaimongkol Nontha-ubol, 34, who was travelling with his wife. The impact of the crash sent the couple through their pickup’s windshield, causing serious injuries. All the injured were sent to Sri Mahapho hospital. Witness Weerachai Maenmai, 39, told police that he saw the pickup speeding from the 304 industrial zone and hitting the motorcycle before it lost control and plunged into the roadside used-cars tent.

One student killed, two hurt in Ratchaburi crash

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

RATCHABURI: A student was killed and two others hurt, one badly, when an SUV rear-ended a pickup truck taking them to school in Photharam district on Wednesday morning.

The impact threw the three students from the back of the pickup. One them went into the roadside canal and drowned.

The crash occurred between kilometre markers 72 and 73 on Phetkasem Road near Wat Don Krabueng intersection around 7am, said Pol Capt Paisarn Chusutthisakul, duty officer at Photharam police station.

The student thrown into the canal and killed was Sawika Kerdrit, 13, a Mathayom Suksa 1 student at Phothawattanasenee School.  Her body was retrieved from the canal before police arrived,  Pol Capt Paisarn said.

The two other injured students, one boy and one girl, both 13, were rushed to a nearby hospital.  One, schoolboy Kritsada Wannabovorn, had serious leg injuries. The other student was identified as Saranrat Sriboran.

Chumphon Khaebamrung, driver of the pickup truck, told police he provided a transportation service for students living in villages to schools in downtown Photharam district.

He had collected the three students first and was going to pick up more at Don Krabueng village when the driver of a speeding Mitsubishi Pajero lost control in an area where the road surface was being repaired.  The vehicle spun around and crashed into the rear of his pickup, Mr Chumphon said.

The impact pushed the school pickup into a ditch dividing the road, and catapulted the three students from the vehicle. The Pajero came to a stop near the canal.

Narit Wongsa, 58, driver of the Pajero, was taken into custody for legal action. Police were investigating.

Four Cambodians killed in crash after police chase

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

CHACHOENGSAO: Four migrant workers were killed in a crash following a police chase in this eastern province in the early hours of Friday.

Plaeng Yao district police were reported about the incident at 2.30am.

While trying to escape highway police, the driver of a pickup truck carrying 21 migrant workers took a narrow soi off No.331 Kabin Buri-Sattahip Road and plunged the truck into a ditch.

Police found 1km from the mouth of the soi an overturned white Toyota pickup truck with a Sa Kaeo licence plate in the roadside ditch. It apparently fell from the road which was 2-3m high.

There were signs some people inside had escaped but four Cambodians stayed at the scene.

After lifting the truck from the ditch, police found the bodies of three men and one woman inside the cab. Another man was also found dead outside the truck. All of them were later identified as Cambodians.

The survivors said the Thai driver was picking up 21 Cambodian migrant workers from Sa Kaeo to work at a construction site in Samut Prakan province.

Two more Thais sat in the front seat while nine of the Cambodians crammed in the cab and the remaining 12 were travelling in the bed.

At the seam between Prachin Buri and Chachoengsao, highway police started chasing the truck. The driver sped from the Khao Hin Son intersection on No.311 Road and made a U-turn near Ban Noen Rai junction to find an escape route from the main road.

With the headlights off, the driver drove into the soi before the truck plunged into the ditch, they said.

One killed, 13 hurt in expressway crash

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

One man was killed and 13 others hurt after a car rammed into a pickup truck carrying workers on an elevated expressway in Bangkok’s Sai Mai district on Saturday.

The pre-dawn crash occurred on the Chalongrat expressway at around 5am, said Pol Lt Col Lapat Thapthim, deputy superintendent at Expressway 1 police station. The incident was reported shortly after.

Police and rescue workers rushing to the scene found the damaged Mazda car with Pathum Thani licence plates on the left lane of the expressway.

The driver, identified later as Wathee Changplaipet, 32, had a chest pain and was trapped inside his car. He was retrieved from the vehicle.

About 100 metres from the car, a Toyota pickup truck was found with its rear damaged. Driver Nimit Thamun, 51, sustained minor injuries and a male worker sitting next to him was unconscious. Rescue volunteers immediately gave the unconscious man first aid but he was pronounced dead shortly later, Thai media reported on Saturday.

Several workers, both men and women, were scattered on the highway and sustained injuries. All 13 injured people were rushed to nearby hospitals.

Mr Wathee told police that he worked as a salesman at a company in Bangkok. Before the crash, he left the firm’s product sales booth in Silom area and was on the way home in Pathum Thani. When arriving at the scene, he admitted to having dozed off at the wheel.

Mr Nimit said he was bringing the workers from Patunam area to a construction site in Sai Mai. While he was driving his pickup truck along the expressway, the car suddenly rammed into the rear of his vehicle.

National coach dies and 11 athletes injured in bus-truck collision
A coach of the Thai national track and field athletes was killed and 11 athletes suffered minor injuries when a bus in which they were travelling on their way to Chiang Mai from Bangkok crashed into the rear of a trailer truck in Chai Nat’s Manorom district on Thursday (Dec 21).

The dead victim was identified as Col Sasithorn Rattanarasri, 52, former champion of 4×100, 800 and 1,500 metre runs who won three gold medals at the 13th Bangkok SEA Games in 1985.

Col Sasithorn is a coach of Thailand’s athletic team and a devoted staff of the Athletic Association of Thailand.

The bus driver, Ronnakorn Wallopsiri, 41, was also injured.

Police said that the athletes were on their way to join the Idemitsu Thailand Grand Prix 2017 in Chiang Mai during Dec 23-24.

Police added that the trailer truck which was travelling in front of the bus suddenly made a U-turn, making it impossible for the following bus to stop and it rammed into the truck.

When driving as close as they do, then of course it's impossible to stop. The police appear to accept it as a valid reason when they should have added that the bus was travelling too close!

Not necessarily. If it were a dual carriageway, it is not unknown for truck drivers or bus drivers to swing across both lanes to be able to negotiate a u-turn. If you need proof, stand at the bus station near Soi 96 when a South bound bus departs.

Mini buses often travel at the speed limit , if the truck driver didn't indicate (could that happen in Thailand?) then I can understand how the accident happened. I personally don't slow down at every u-turn I approach if there's traffic in the inside lane, do you?

You are correct of course, BB. It did say the truck was travelling in front of the bus but doesn't say whether it was in the same lane. If it did truly swing across without warning (and yes I've seen that too) then I get it. But if it was in front in the same lane, then the bus was too close.

19 students hurt in van crash during heavy rain
Nineteen students were injured, four of them seriously, when a van taking them to school crashed and rolled over at a curve during heavy rain in Mae Chan district on Wednesday morning.

The accident occurred on Phahon Yothin Road in tambon Mae Chan about 6.40am, said Pol Capt Nopphon Kamnerd, a duty officer at Mae Chan police station.

Police and rescue workers reported finding the damaged van standing upright on the road's grassy median strip. Many students, aged 5-17 years, were trapped inside. One schoolgirl was thrown out of the vehicle during the crash.

All 19 students, boys and girls, were injured and were rushed to a nearby hospital. Most had minor injuries such as bruising, but four of them were seriously hurt.

The driver, Yongyut Thongkon, 54, told police he was taking the students to their respective schools. It was raining heavily, the road was slippery and he lost control at a curve. The van hit the road barrier and rolled over before coming to rest on the road divider.
