As usual, some Thai guy transporting workers that are stuffed into the back of a pickup "Cheap-Charlie Style" and he's driving like a madman possessed to get them all to work at some legal/illegal construction site or worse.

TBH, the junta tried to reign this in, which was a good idea, but the moron majority got the hump and it was dropped swift style.

Well...what do you expect then? Leave them to their fate if they fail to recognize even the most obvious of safety issues. Can't make the horse drink..even if you you show it water.

Whatever tbh...a news story we will continue to hear every week or two really.

If it's a choice between risking your life in the back of a pickup to earn some money for your family, or not working, sounds like the devil and the deep to me. The junta telling people they can't work was never going to fly. Yes, it is what it is, and a law fining the passengers rather than the driver was not the way to stop it.

"a Facebook post by a police officer in the Deep South complained that the people who came up with such traffic laws are those who spend their time in air-conditioned rooms and do not care about the poor.

“How would 10 people be able to go to work together in the front space of a vehicle? How could we [the police] fight back against bandits who shoot at us?” he said, referring to the fact that police also sit in the back of pickups."

and:

"“People in rural areas do not have enough money to pay for public transport so they just travel together in a pickup as a group to save on transportation costs,”

Trailer truck rams into roadside food shop, driver wounded

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... er-wounded

LAMPANG -- A articulated lorry loaded with containers rammed into a food shop on Phahon Yothin highway in Thoen district early on Sunday after the driver - who was seriously injured - lost control of the vehicle, police said.

Pol Capt Phakphum Wongchai, a Thoeng police duty officer, said the accident occurred at about 8am when the driver of the lorry, which was heading for Lampang from Tak, lost control of the vehicle between kilometre markers 615-616 on Phahon Yothin highway near Ban Nong Chiang Ran in tambon Lam Raet.

The lorry swerved across the median strip to the other side of the highway.

The driver, Somphot Baokhamphui, 29, managed to jump out of the vehicle through the left passenger door onto the road while the vehicle was still in motion.  He suffered multiple wounds all over the body.

The driverless 18-wheeler then rammed into a food shop before grinding to a halt.  The shop was badly damaged, but nobody was hurt as there were no customers in it at the time.

Police were investigating.  It was initially believed the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel.

I've never driven in this country except for one time in Buriram. My ex's brother had left his rotten, decaying pick up at the family house and I was asked to drive it with some other villagers to get vegetables from a farm. There was a wedding that day.
Got down the dusty track to the main road - change down from 3rd to 2nd and brake. What brakes? Nothing and I already knew that the hand brake didn't work. Managed to turn left and luckily there wasn't one of those artics thundering by at that moment. An uphill gradient so managed to get the piece of **** over to side of the road.
That rust bucket was driven at least 20kms without brakes by garage people to repair the cable. Two days later, guess what? The brakes didn't work again.
And I wonder why I don't drive over here? I'm still alive. Hell, crossing Petchkasem Road by foot at 11.30am on a Sunday morning isn't exactly a walk in the park.

I just never really get used to the idea of the driver running away thing, and then turning himself in the next day or being caught at a som-tam shop near by.

Guess the cynical answer is that they want the drugs or alcohol to have got out of their system before reporting so they get a more softer sentence etc.

As an aside, at the educational facility I worked at previously, there was a student killed late at night in an accident with a truck close to the property and the student was drunk plus was at fault...but the truck driver tried to flee straight away and only stayed when everyone convinced him that he wasn't at fault.

The "have an accident and run" thing is still strange to me really...even after living here a while

Yes I completely agree with you and truly don't see any other reason why 'clean' drivers would run away like they do so often.
Falling asleep is one thing, but having an accident when sober, why would you choose to run away?

You're a poor truck driver. You have an accident and kill (or injure) a student and you might think it's not your fault. You don't know who his family is or what status they have. You don't know if there were witnesses or what they might say, especially if the deceased's family gets to them. You certainly don't expect fairness from the police. What would you instinctively do?

30 INJURED ON PHUKET MOUNTAIN AS BUS LEFT HANGING
Thirty people were injured when a bus left the road and nearly plunged down a steep mountain slope after colliding with other vehicles in Patong, local police said Monday.

The bus, which was carrying 25 tourists from China, collided Sunday night with a van, tuk-tuk and motorcycle on a curving stretch of road as it was coming down the mountain, according to police Lt. Col. Theerasak Boonsang of Patong police.

The bus slid halfway off the road but was stopped from falling down the mountain because by a large pipe. Theerasak dismissed reports that the bus had brake problems.

“It simply drove too fast,” he said.

The incident injured all 25 tourists on the bus, who were clients of Pacific Holiday Co. Ltd. and on their way back to the Phuket Graceland Resort & Spa.

A Thai motorcyclist, van driver, tuk-tuk driver and Japanese tourist riding in a tuk-tuk were also injured.

Only the bus driver remains hospitalized. Theerasak said the driver was in critical condition, so police were unable to read charges against him.

Girl killed as mother dozes off on bike

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... ff-on-bike

Motorcycle was carrying six people including twin infants

PRACHIN BURI: An 11-year-old girl was killed and five family members injured when their motorcycle struck a road divider after the woman driving the bike dozed off early Saturday morning.

The fatal crash took place between kilometre makers 191 and 192 on Suwannasorn Road in tambon Kham Tanod of Prachantakham district, said Pol Maj Arthit Sriprat, investigation chief at the Prachantakham police station, who was alerted at around 6.30am.

The body of a girl, identified later as Penpitcha Kullabut, 11, was found lying dead on the road when police arrived. A baby-carrier pack was attached to her chest. The damaged motorcycle was found five metres away.

Injured were Suwitchaya Nanoi, 37, two sons aged 7 and 2 years, and twin daughters aged 10 months old. One of the infants, Pitcharat, was badly hurt. All were taken to a nearby hospital.

Ms Suwitchaya had driven the bike carrying her five children from Ayutthaya to visit her husband, who worked as a driver at a temple in Wang Nam Yen district of Sa Kaeo. She was returning to Ayutthaya when the accident occurred.

The mother put Pitcharat in a baby-carrier around her neck, her two sons sat in the middle and Penpitcha, carrying the other infant, Siriwan, sat on the back of the bike, said Pol Maj Arthit.

At one point Ms Suwitchaya dozed off and the bike veered into a concrete divider. Penpitcha fell off the bike but managed to shield baby Siriwan from impact before her head struck the concrete edge of the road divider, said Pol Maj Arthit.

The mother told police that she had left her house in Ayutthaya after a quarrel with her mother at 11pm on Friday. After visiting her husband in Sa Kaeo, she was returning home but admitted that by that time she was suffering from sleep deprivation.
