Driving distance from Hua Hin to Phuket

Can someone give me a rough indication of how far it is by car from HH to Phuket (e.g. Patong Beach) and how long it takes driving normally (i.e. observing most of the speed limits).

i have not been down there for around 2 years but it used to take me around 7 hours depending what time i set off but the speed limit was not in mind when i drove down, i would say if you are going to go at 120 all the way it would be around 8-9 hours

We did last year, but stopped on the way. If straight through I agree 8 hours

It's 672 km (approx. 7-8 hours with 3-4 stops) from HH (main red light) to Phuket (Lotus Shopping Mall) and another 5 km to Patong from there. HH-Surathani-Phangna-Phuket.

Should you wish to take the route from Chumpong to Ranong to Phuket, it'll take you 1 hour more and add 50 km to the trip.

Some new improved roads between Surat thani and Phuket have made it a much easier drive than two years ago, I've been down twice in the last 6 months and taken under 6 hours each time, 2 x 20 minute stops.

It took ages, I did it last year. It was a bit of a nightmare as some of the bridges had been washed away in the storms. I recall it took us about 8 hrs. Unless you want to see the scenery I would fly. I did not find the journey great, a little boring. Also I would not attempt it at night either.

Now that I think about it, I haven't taken my wave to Phuket


I know this is an old thread, but for anyone considering a trip to Phuket from Hua-Hin, I would say it's probably easier and quicker driving rather than flying, given that you would have to get to Swampy and back, wait for flights, and so on.

When we go down we leave HH at 03:00 and we are on the island for 09:30 or so and checked in by around 10:15.
If we leave any later then there will be too many pit-stops and it can drag on to nearer the7.5 hour mark.

Not a fun drive, so many idiots on the road. I hated it, but it takes about the same time as to drive to BK and fly
