Got some very very precarious situations about that. Looks like u really not drive too muchg in thailand. (Says someone who drives about 30 000km/year with his own car here)
Yes, I also was wondering about that. The imbeciles would be locked up where I come from. Just returned from quick round 1100 km trip to the North, and it is not possible to keep track of the number of times a truck pulled out in front of me as described. :guns:

I hear you on that one Neurus.

Pull-outs and U-Turners can be truly frightening if you are on a bike and they don't see you.

You are a braver man than me, Gunga Din! And I don`t think it has anything to do whether or not they see you!!!!

Might have something to do with the blacked out windows, sunglasses and mobile /SMS use while driving. No mention of course on bad eye sight, no licence, no car maintenance and the fact that you are a farang and they don't give a rats if they wipe you out as they know you can't/won't do anything!

Do u have some kind of paranoia regarding thai/farang relations?

How the hell a truck driver could only imagine, that it is a farang driver, driving at high speed towards him???

I have to say it isn't always that hard to tell......last week on the way home from golf I turned off the bypass onto one of the roads back to Petchkasem......possibly I misjudged the speed of the car passing a truck approaching me as I turned. I figured him for about 120 but probably from what happened he was doing closer to 160.

As I was turning I watched him veer from the fast lane to the slow lane, of course with his headlights on to warn me he wasn't about to brake, and I'm pretty sure he tried to T-Bone me.

Of course, maybe he just felt obligated to help me remember I should never, ever, assume everyone might actually want to live through the day as I do.

I'm pretty sure he recognized me as a falang by the courteous way in which I signaled and sped up as I was turning......unlike a Thai driver who slows down when turning.

I'm sorry Charlesh and T.I.G.R but I can't agree with your comments that 'they're out to get us because we're farangs'. I've known several Thais who've been in accidents involving a wayward truck. It's down to simple ignorance of safe driving. Some of them have no idea of braking distances, or the handling of whatever they happen to be driving. When will they realise that pick-ups are designed to have weight in the back?

It's even more scarier in Nakhon Pathom. They peel off the Petchkasem highway and next minute they're in the town - still driving at break-neck speeds  . The standard of driving here is appalling and extremely frightening to someone (like me) who is aware of the potential dangers. I loved driving in the UK, but I've just driven once in Nakhon Pathom and it wasn't a pleasant experience. I've lost my confidence because of the amount of near-misses on a relatively short journey, but when I talk about it to my (female) Thai colleagues who drive they give me that 'what are your talking about?' look. I guess they just trundle along blissfully unaware of what's going on around them. I wish I could be more like them, but I just can't... :(

This thread reminds me of a saying my Dad used to say to me as I went out on my motorbike having just passed my test...

'He speeded early to his grave, never to enjoy the time he saved'

 Was that wishful thinking, or just a warning? Whatever, it seems a strange thing to say to one's son.

I thought it was pretty obvious... :|

What he was saying was that people often speed to save time but it often leads to an early grave so you never get to enjoy the time you would have saved.

It quite a well known saying. He didn't make it up.

I'm sorry Randy, maybe it's the different culture between Cockney and Janner, but to me it sounds an awful thing to say to your child who has just his test.

It's not worth falling out over, so I think it's best we agree to disagree on this one - probably it's me anyway.

He didn't Randy, I just googled it and it came up in the August 1959 edition of the Rotarian magazine:

Far from it being Randy bashing day - I've already admitted that it's probably my interpretation of the statement. I'm sure I've got just as many sayings that would sound strange to you.

Randy I wasn't bashing, I was actually trying to be supportive; I hadn't heard that phrase before but it sounded like something my father would say which is why I bunged it into google.
I think we're of a similar era, so if it was in a magazine in 1959 it would have been in common use for our parents generation.
