??? After reading these accounts of corruption by those who are in charge of public morality I cannot understand how "What America needs is a hypodermic of morality". quoted. My retirement plans are influenced by this.

I was a month out. Easy to lose a month in Isaan
Well
Well guys never driven in Thailand so only experienced it as a passenger. Politeness seems to be the best thing and showing some humility. All the people I driven with had this attitude. Amazing too when they realise your British the subject moves over to football.
Did get a ticket once when on the day I rented a motorbike on Poonsuk I test drove it round the temple grounds. Came back into Poonsuk turned right and ran into a road block. No helmet going up a wrong way soi.
Sat down with the Mib and explained I had just hired it and taken it for a drive round the temple to check it out. They said your Britsh arnt you. Yes to which they replied "which football team do you support?" So I reeled off the top 5 teams and entered into a discussion involving football in a Thai newspaper. After a few cigs had been dealt out my ticket was torn up and I told to go and get my helmet from the rental place across the street. Everybody had a good laugh. The police, the rental people and the BGs watching and even me. Nver hired again though.

crooked cops pulling you over
Why pay anything? If they want money, just say ok lets go down to the police station to pay the fine for this made up infraction.

have you been to a Thai police station? I have personally heard police shout in a police station in front of witness' and myself, that they wish the crim had a weapon so they could kill him and not do paperwork...good luck with going down to the station.

Sorry this is a bit old, but had to add, this is the precise attitude that you read about in the papers where some attitude has landed them in jail or shot. Not saying its morally correct, but standing up for your civil liberties in this place is just dangerous.A friend refuses point blank to pay anything and says take me to the station then, so far the dibble has always backed down to him. Hes lived in Thailand for 15 years but only speaks English when they stop him. Although I think a lot of the reason he gets away with it is if you dont know him he's a bit of an intimdating sort to look at.
I was stopped by the police on the bypass yesterday. I've been driving here now for 12 months and thats the first time I've been stopped.
They told me I was speeding, but of course they had no equipment to measure speed, and they had no idea what speed I was doing. I don't have a Thai licence and I left my International licence back in my home country in September, so I could only show them the licence from my home country.
No problem. 100 baht and I was out of there. I guess the "fine" might have been more if my Thai wife was not in the car.
From what I could see, it looked like they were stopping most new/nice looking cars driving in the outside lane.
