You can teach until your brain rots but if the student doesn't want to learn it's all for nil.
That's the caveat here, and I believe it's referred to as intrinsic and extrinsic motivation (intrinsic means from within and extrinsic from outside).

In a nutshell, the intrinsically motivated student is there because he/she wants to learn and get along/succeed and the extrinsically motivated student is there because mum and dad have sent him and say he/she has to get a degree (however worthless) of some type...but if he/she had his/her way would float along/sponge/feel entitled throughout life. They are both easy to spot.

Unfortunately, at many mainstream places the later is all too common.

That is a very accurate statement for all nations.
