I can only hope that the behavior is eradicated but I have been pulled up a couple of times for using the word "hope" when it refers to changes in Thailand.

I am not a teacher and know my limitations and patience, I could never become a teacher, of pre 16s, as my instincts would click-in and I would also end up clipping one of them around the ear, if they were misbehaving. I take my hat off to good teachers who face this every day... I know my limitations and could never do this job.

This is not the first instance of "instant punishment" that I have seen reported and seriously wonder how widespread it is in the local teaching profession. Maybe the forum teachers can comment.

As I posted earlier, local managers sometimes bully their staff, mostly verbally, instances that I have observed, and it is small wonder that this behavior exists, if it is the excepted and accepted from their education.

Eradication may take some time.....

A lot of classroom violence in the UK
The schoolboy is running around the classroom shouting when his young, female teacher tells him that if he won’t sit still and do his work, he will have to finish it at lunchtime.
Seconds later, furious at being told off, the child shoves the teacher to the floor.
The tiny thug continues to lash out, punching and hitting her repeatedly before sinking his teeth deep into the flesh of her upper arm. He is just five years old.

I suppose we are lucky they don't have access to guns, like other countries!! :guns:
Personally I would not mind if my child had a small "smack", but I mean small not GBH :P

Obviously controvertial, but a whack with the slipper or cane never did me any harm. If used appropriately I don't see a huge problem. Of course the definition of appropriate would differ from person to person.

It would certainly help alleiviate problems such as Siani describes.

At my comp, one teacher used to throw the wooden chalk board cleaner at us if we were talking, misbehaving or not paying attention. It hurt. I far preferred the teacher who just used to chuck chalk! Another used to like to twist your ears. In one incident in my class, which everyone was unhappy about, a teacher slapped one kid across the face, but then by the time I left, I saw a kid slap the headmaster in the same way and tragically, one pupil stabbed another to death in the playground, But that was all in the 70's.

I also was sometimes punished at school, who wasn't? Slipper, plimsoll (Dap), ruler, chalk, blackboard cleaner, cane, et al. But... Be careful the example you teach. Some will use this as their standard in the future and take it many steps further. We can all tell stories of how it didn't do us any harm... Umm.. there are quite a few that I remember that used this as their standard!

Sometimes works the other way. I remember an incident at school with a particularly nasty history teacher with a face like a bulldog. During one lesson he was staring out of the window with his head up against the glass looking out for latecomers when one of the students sitting next to the window pulled the string on the venetian blind causing it to come crashing down on his head. He staggered back, dazed with a visible red mark appearing on his temple while everyone was doing their best not to laugh.

Yes, most definitely. It taught me that there were boundaries in life, and if I did things correctly, everything would be much better, run more smoothly. I learnt to respect authority.

None of the punishment I ever received (after primary school, where there was a pretty young teacher who did pick on me/bully me) was ever inappropriate/not deservered.

Absolutely did good. I was educated in the 50/60's in the UK. Discipline was strong but generally fair.I would not go home and complain to my parents for they would definitely taken the teachers side. Then in the 70's discipline disappeared and the kids were never in the wrong! The lack of discipline in modern society stems from this period and IMHO a return to the standards I "enjoyed " would be a welcome benefit but I realise it won't happen. Shame!!

Is it a small step, though, really? No action was taken, and due to this, any other students that might have thought "maybe we should also expose this behaviour from our teacher" when seeing the original video are most likely now thinking "what's the point? nothing is going to come from it"

This clip from The Matrix film always makes me smile if you switch Keano Reeves for 'Somchai' the student and the company boss for a school teacher, company name for school name and it's about being late for/missing class instead of work. At the end, also switch finding another job to failing exams.

I would enjoy giving that speech to numerous students sometimes.

My school used physical punishment--caning, but used it very little and only for really serious offences It was the knowledge that COULD happen to you that kept you in line.
