The Learning Centre in Hua Hin has been designated by Cambridge (U.K.) to be its scholarshop test centre for student from parts of Bangkok and Southern Thailand.
The first examination took place at the Learning Centre on Saturday, 19 June 2010 for 30 scholarship applicants.
Sinsook Chirachant, director of the Learning Centre, said this first of many more such examinations, went well. The students were happy to travel to Hua Hin and enjoy the local friendly atmosphere (and the Jazz Festival). We are proud that our school has been selected by Cambridge for this trust as it demonstrates our creditably.

Computer Based Training (CBT)

Post by bapak »

The Learning Centre will shortly introduce Computer Based Training (CBT) for a number of language areas such as TOEIC, Beginner German and English, etc. There will also be CBT for Microsoft Office.

Student will buy a block of time say 10 x 1 hour at Baht 70/hour... and will be assigned a computer with the lessons installed. They will proceed at their own pace with the lessons with the aid of the computer screen, headphones and microphone. Students will also have a workbook so that they may continue study at home. There will be a teacher supervising the classroom to offer assistance when required.

Hi bapak, all looks good and professional. Nice to get designated by Cambridge, impressive. :thumb:

As an aside, perhaps it would be good to tell everyone the qualification standard requirements of Thai and foreign teachers at the center and how many you have, sure people would like to know.

How about class sizes? How many students do you enroll on a specific course before the classes start?

That would be useful to know.
When you refer to Cambridge (UK) do you mean Cambridge University ?

Just noticed that, as explained in the opening advertorial post, it's a private college called Cambridge Seminars and located in Cambridge in the UK :

A reasonable question, Spitfire...
- A minumum requirement for both Thai and foreign teachers is a BA in a related subject (education/linguistics/etc.). We have BAs, MA, and 1 PhD. One also has Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) Certificate and several have TESOL.
- Our senior Thai language teacher has a BA in Teaching from Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, a MA in Adult Education from Central Missouri State University, and a Diploma in Applied Linguistics from RELC in Singapore.
- Our director, Sinsook Chirachant has a BBA from Morehead State University in Kentucky, USA and TESOL Certificate IV from Greenwich College in Sydney.
- All the teachers information has been lodged at the Ministry of Education.
- All foreign teachers have Work Permits (so please,Tourist Police - do not bother to come again and again).
- Class size is minimum of 4 and a maximum of 10. Average is 7. And 1 on 1 if requested.
- We have recently added the computer school on the second floor of our building. We are attempting to be innovative, both in equipment and teaching methods.

Sounds good bapak, like the class size attitude, cool. Sorry to speculate, but are you going down the ESOL line of thinking then if you're coupled up with Cambridge, in whatever form?

Sounds like some capable workers with you and lots of choice of study areas, like it. Are you requiring TEFLs or CELTAs from people or not?

Sorry to ask too many questions, just inquisitive, but it's good to tell people stuff like this, the more info you give out the better.

Best of luck, seems like you've got it on the right path.

Not to sound too ridiculous....

With having the software etc. could this work "long distance"? My wife is very keen (well I am, but useless at languages), in learning Thai. We have a property in Hua Hin which we use for the breaks we manage to get from our fearless leaders, and hope to spend a lot more time there in the near future before ultimately living in Thailand. Unfortunately, 10 days here and there at the moment doesn't lend itself to learning Thai........ especially when those 10 days are used for HOLS!!

We have obviously looked at courses closer to home, but in Chongqing they are very much few and far in-between and not with native (or even) qualified speakers/teachers.

Is this something you could offer/have looked at or may possibly look at in the future?

Hi... Thank you for your earlier tip to me for viewing Rugby via internet. It has been quite useful. Best reception I am getting is via Iraq.

Now down to your question. Over the years we have looked at a number of online training of Thai. In our opinion, not worth the money. Best suggestion I can make is for you to purchase the textbook we use for starters - "Thai for Beginners". We can provide with some free disks that will also be useful. This should give you some insight into the language. Then, perhaps, during your holiday here, you can do some intensive training.

Cost for the book is Baht 300 but I would have to check postage cost to your Chongqing location. What is the mail/Customs situation? If you want it, PM me your address. And rather than mess around with costly money transfers, you can pay us on your next visit.

We do plan on offering TESOL next year in the form of an all inclusive package of one month including tuition and accommodation. Course material has already been approved by the Ministry of Education.

"...Are you requiring TEFLs or CELTAs from people or not?"... Do you mean our teachers? Yes, in one of its many forms - TEFL,CELTA, TESOL - is required by our English language teachers.

Now for my two cents... When we started our school here in Hua Hin, we invisioned that the majority of the students would be local Thais seeking to learn English to advance their future. Alas, this was not to be. Majority of student are foreigners, both Tourists and Expats, to learn Thai. Ok, we are thankful for that as it pays the rent but on a personal basis it has been rather disappointing.

We are all aware of the lack of motivation by Thai youth today in Hua Hin. Sad to say. The only time there is some impetus is when local school exam time is approaching, and there is a sudden demand for rote tutoring for the answers to the exams, with no analytical consideration whatsoever. Sorry... but we decline to be part of this process.

Another problem is being able to commuicate to the locals who may wish to improve their well-being. There is no real local press media nor a internet portal that has some popularity. Our best Thai students come via "word of mouth". So please tell your friends and neighbours.

Bapak (for those who may be curious about my nom de plume, it means father in Bahasa... or in my case, great, great grandfather).
