Thailand International Kite Festival - WITH PHOTOS

Post by Big Boy »

After disappointing many people last year when it didn't happen, the kite festival is back this year.

It will run from 10 to 12 March 2017 at Cha-Am Beach. Daily opening times are from 10am, and closing is at 8pm.

A fantastic sight, not to be missed.

Believe me, it is an incredible spectacle, especially when the tide goes out and you can see the action as you paddle in the sea.

Assuming you're driving from Hua Hin, and turning off Petchkasem at the traffic lights, turn left when you get to the sea. It's a long way down that road (where the road forks). You can't miss it, there'll be all sorts of crazy kites in the sky - a wonderful sight.

BB. Saw one once at the army camp on Pranburi road. Fan bloody tastic.

How the hell they stop those kites taking the guys holding onto the ropes into the air, I don't know..

we had a great day out and bet the Cha Am venue will be just as good.

👍

I was wondering why anyone would take dumpy bags to the beach, now I know.

Great show, love to have been there.

Are you talking the monster sized kites in the video, or normal kites?

If normal, just keep an eye open as you drive down the motorway - you soon see some on sale.

BB, not interested in those kites being sold by the roadside, they will only fly in gale force winds...
Looking for something that will fly in light wind (used to love those fighting kites we had in Singapore - made with thin kite paper and bamboo strips; kite string was coated with glass so could cut other kites from the sky.. including suffering the same fate)
Am also looking for kite-making supplies like mylar and carbon-fiber rods and proper kite string.

It's a shame you couldn't make it to the festival. There were a few hobby shops there with all the materials you could imagine, and kids making their own. However, if you're really keen, here a couple of snaps taken today with phone numbers and a web site:
