CLUB ANNOUNCEMENT

There will be a further period of disruption to the club's training schedule from 26th to 30th Aug'16.

Sensei John has been invited to join the Chinese Wado squad for training at their forthcoming Summer Camp at Chiang Mai University.

This is not an opportunity that comes along every day, so he has accepted the invite, and is quite excited at the prospect.

CLUB ANNOUNCEMENT

Due to yesterday's tragic news, we have contacted the police, and they have given us the green light to continue with tonight's session on the proviso we are quiet.

So tonight's session is DEFINITELY ON.

If anybody feels they would rather not attend, please advise Sensei John, and due to the exceptional circumstances, he will assess you next week instead.

Hi John

Just as a matter of interest, have you thought about contacting the event organizers of next week's competition to confirm whether it is still on or not, given that so many events are being canceled or postponed?

Would hate to arrive in Bangkok only to find the venue deserted. :D

IMPORTANT CLUB NOTICE

Last Wednesday (19 Oct 16) saw the year’s last Kumite training session. Wednesday Kumite training sessions will resume in January. The culmination of this year’s Kumite training will see Kaylene and Doreen competing at the Armando Championships in Bangkok this coming Sunday.

Until now, attendance at Kumite training has been by invitation only (by Sensei John). From January 2017, Sensei John will make Kumite training available to everybody. Kumite training will be FREE to all students. The requirements for attendance will be:

• All students must have a gum shield. No gum shield, no training.

• All students must attend at least one Traditional Karate session each week. If students only attend the Kumite session, they will be expected to pay a normal class fee.

Kumite sessions are very hard work, and there is a possibility students will be hit. Most blows will be controlled, but the occasional non-controlled blow is inevitable. If students are unable to keep up with the fast pace, they will be asked to sit out.

The club has a limited amount of protective equipment, which can be borrowed, but if you’re serious about training, then it is advisable to purchase your own. Certainly, if students intend entering competition, we do not have enough equipment to lend everybody. The equipment is not available locally, and has to be sourced from Bangkok, or further afield. You are welcome to obtain your own (Sensei John can advise suppliers) or you can obtain via the club – if you obtain via the club, the club will significantly subsidise your purchase i.e. Sensei John will charge 4,500 Baht per set (of course, if there are special offers on at the time of purchase, the club will not charge more than the actual cost + p&p). We know this is a large outlay, but parents are welcome to arrange payment by smaller installments to the club if necessary.

Protective equipment comprises:

• Chest Protector
• Gloves Red and Blue
• Shin Pads Red and Blue
• Foot Pads Red and Blue
• Belts Red and Blue

As with this year, we will actively seek competition. Each competition will be advised, but participation is optional. Most competition will be in the Bangkok area, and will obviously incur travelling expense and overnight accommodation before the fight is highly recommended. It might involve some time off school – Sensei John can provide competition details to schools if required. Sensei John will travel to each competition entered to act as team coach, and to support students.

Hey John

Just want to say a big thank you for all your (and Neal's) efforts and dedication. Without it, occasions like yesterday simply wouldn't be possible, and I know Kaylene and Doreen are equally as grateful.

Both girls picked up a bronze medal, but if I had my way, I would personally have given Doreen a GOLD medal. You know why of course.

See you all tonight.

Hopefully, now they've broken their duck, they'll soon be able to turn Bronze into Gold.

23 October 2016 was the karate element of this triple Martial Arts Fest. The karate element was sponsored by Armando, and was the friendliest karate tournament that we've been involved in since moving to Thailand. Yes, there was an admin problem yesterday, but it was sorted so easily - It was a pleasure to be part of it. Nobody tried to make a mountain out of a molehill.

The competition started on time, and ran pretty much to schedule. Some of the karate was poor, but there was some very good stuff on show as well. Everybody looked to be enjoying what they were doing, and nobody was made to feel silly if, for example, they forgot their kata moves. It was by far the best ‘karate family’ tournament I’ve attended and it reminded me of many of Sensei John’s earlier tournaments in the UK.

Facilities were also more than ample at Udomsuksa School in the heart of Bangkok with a lovely air conditioned hall, clean toilet facilities, refreshments on sale at reasonable prices and car parking.

This was only Kaylene and Doreen’s 2nd competition. The first being a non-event when they had to compete after having to travel through the night to get there, and ultimately losing to a lack of sleep rather than their opponents. Yesterday’s competition was different, and both girls lost in the semi-finals of their individual events.

Doreen’s fight was like watching Sensei John in the early years. She went 3 – 0 down very early in the fight, so threw caution to the wind. It was one of the best fights of the day. Unfortunately, Doreen’s determination was not rewarded by the judges points, but if it had been a different sport, or a street fight Doreen would have won by a mile. Lesson learned, Doreen has to keep that front hand a little higher.

Kaylene lost in a very closely fought contest (1 – 0) to the eventual winner.

Great experience for both competitors, and hopefully they will grow from it.

Yesterday was the last competition of the year for the club, and hopefully under Sensei John’s new criterion for Kumite training, the squad will grow next year and go on to more success. It was lovely to end the year with a bit of silverware (well bronzeware) for the cabinet.

One of yesterday's semi-final fights (Doreen is Blue):

LOL - a shame knock out punches don't count, else Doreen would have made the final on 4 minutes.
