A message for all students

On our recent Summer Course in Portland, Sensei Grimes started by giving a talk to the students about the importance of Dojo Maxims, (rules of etiquette) that should always be applied. These rules are expected to be followed, and will be enforced by Senior grades:

The Instructor should always be addressed as Sensei, never by first name, other senior grades that are training should either be addressed as Sensei, or Sempai. Instructors and Students are not as one, you should Respect, and Revere your Instructor at all times.

If you arrive late for training, you should perform "Seiza", and wait to be called into the training.

Whilst training there should be no idle chatter, eating, or chewing gum. Water can be drunk when a break is called, and eating can take place on a break, but outside of the Dojo.

ALL jewellery must be removed where possible. if it cannot, then it must be taped over, necklaces must be removed. Jewellery can cause danger when practising with a partner.

Finger and Toe nails should be kept short and clean, again because of the danger they can cause in pairwork.

If you feel unwell, or need to use the toilets, speak to the instructor, don`t just leave the Dojo.

Always bow when entering, or leaving the Dojo.

Limber up quietly before the training starts.

When a grading is due, do not assume that you are ready to take it, your Instructor will tell you when he feels you are ready.

Never assume that you will pass a grade, do not be complacent, work hard for it.

You must make every effort to attend training courses. Those taking, or eligible to take 2nd Dan and above are required to attend at least 50% of the Refereeing courses. Not just when grading is due.

It was a huge day for the club yesterday.

In the afternoon Sensei John completed his first session at the new Hua Hin International School.

In the evening, it was back to the regular dojo for gradings and assessments. One of Sensei John's longest serving students achieved her 6th Kyu (Green Belt), which is quite an achievement. This is halfway to a Black Belt. Very impressive for both student and teacher.

Hi John

A big Thank You for all the effort you have put in to help get Kaylene to this stage. Watching her do her Green belt grading, I was pleasantly surprised at how confident she appeared to be. Congrats to her, and to you. :thumb:

Hi John

Am I right in thinking that the 27th will also be the last class this year? Hopefully Kaylene will manage to end the year with her first blue, and Shayna with her first red. :D

That was the plan, but I am really hoping to continue maybe 2 weeks more - can't confirm anything for a few weeks yet.

Yes, hopefully Kaylene will be ready to assess for her first Blue, but Shayna is several years away from her first Red (even Kaylene is at least 36 weeks away from that stage :D ). Shayna will be assessing for her first White. An easy mistake to make.

CLUB ANNOUNCEMENT

Christmas grading is always a special day for Sensei John and students alike. It is a tradition that all students are given the opportunity to achieve their next level for Christmas (providing they pass).

Several students are unable to make the already re-arranged 27 November grading (and James will be fresh back from his holiday). We have therefore decided to re-arrange to 4 Dec 15.

If this is still inconvenient for some, Sensei John will make special arrangements for the few. We don't want to disappoint anybody.

CLUB ANNOUNCEMENT

Due to parking difficulties outside of the Dojo, a kind neighbour has cleared a large parking area for us all to use. We would be grateful if you would use this area for anything more than pick up/collection.

Hello John - it's been almost 3 years since my boy Tom & I came to train with you whilst on holiday & we're back again in December but I can see that you won't be running any classes by then due to Christmas, which I understand. However, if you will still be in Hua Hin during December, let me know if you would like to do a bit of training with Tom as he's going for his 2nd dan next year and will be bringing his gi in the hope of training somewhere anyway. Cheers, Jaime

CLUB ANNOUNCEMENT

10 Days ago we announced that a neighbour had kindly paid to have the waste land opposite the Dojo cleared for the karate club to use as a car park. Thank you everybody for parking there,

Now the embarrassing bit - we have now been advised that our neighbour did not obtain permission from the land owner to dismantle the fence and clear the land :D .

The land owner has raised an objection. Sorry, but we now have to ask that you refrain from parking on the car park in future.

CLUB ANNOUNCEMENT

Students have been told that they need to wear Gum Shields for their own protection when kumite training. We have had 2 (accidental) incidents in 2 weeks. For safety reasons, Sensei John will be restricted in what he teaches until students comply.

Those that already have them, are complaining they don't like them. Students must be aware that they will not be able to enter any competition unless they wear a Gum Shield. They need to get used to wearing them now.

Basic 'mould your own' Gum Shields will be available from most sports shops very cheaply. The better option is to have a custom made Gum Shield made at your dentist. These offer much better protection, but are quite costly.
