Hua Hin to Khao Takiab

Prior to this visit to Hua Hin, there were several reports of a filthy beach at Hua Hin. Finding this totally out of character, I said that I would walk the beach, and report my findings.

The first thing we did was a couple days ago. We took a walk to the Chinese Temples down at the side of the Hilton. I have to admit, the rocks we looked over the wall were a disgrace, and had clearly not been cleaned for some time. However, not somewhere you would normally consider swimming from. Yes, it was an eyesore.

Today, my son and I did the walk from the Hilton to Khao Takiab. I took photos all of the way along - I will post them as proof of what we saw when we return to the UK next month. What did we see? .............

- 12 Paper/polythene bags
- 1 Tyre
- 1 Rusting Paint can
- 1 Drinking Straw.

I'm not sure how far the walk is, but I defy anybody to walk on any beach anywhere in the world and find less rubbish.

When we started the walk, the tide was a fair way out. By the time we finished the walk, I would estimate the tide was about 75% in.

By road, HH to Khao Takiab is 7km. Not sure what it is along the beach, but I'd guess it's pretty much the same as the road runs pretty parallel to the beach.

I doubt you could walk 100m along any inhabited beach in the world and find less after tide change .

Hopefully your observations and photographs can be used in a positive way .

Good to hear its being looked after. I've done that walk many a time and not seen to much flotsam....

Its the water quality that concerns me!

BB I have also walked that trip from the Hilton to the Big Buddah at the end of the beach and reckon the trip is about 6 sigha's (stopping off for much needed refreshments on the way).

I'm very sorry, but my trip report missed out one very important element.

About 2/3 of the way towards Khao Takieb there was a stretch of beach where for about 30(ish) yards the sand turned a reddish colour. There was also a strange smell that neither of us recognised. In that area, there was some standing water that had a thick film of water on top. We watched for a while as the tide came in, and as the water covered the sand, a film was forming on the surface.

There were 2 fishing boats on the sand, and I wandered if one of them was leaking something.

On my return home, I mentioned it to my daughter, and she said an old boat had been rotting away in that area for some time, and something had been absorbed by that part of the beach.

This was a very localised incident, but one that the local authorities need to deal with soonest. I would guess that whatever the film was, it was toxic. This area is away from what I would classify as the main swimming areas, but with such a nice beach, you could be tempted to take a dip anywhere.

Above is a photo of just some of the school kids who were cleaning the beach on the 7/8 for the Queens birthday. Maybe this is why it looks so good?

I did the walk in the opposite direction 2 days ago (Khao Takiab to Hua Hin). Your photo could be the reason for its cleanliness on my first walk.

There was considerably more litter on the beach, although I wouldn't call it out of control - it was more what I would have expected to be washed up by the tide. Whilst there is debris in the sea, you will never stop this.
