Things to See & Do Hua Hin - Krailarte Niwate Mangrove

Post by Big Boy »

I haven't done one of these reports for many months, and just happened across this one by accident early this morning.

I went down to Wat Khao Krai Lard to watch the PRESERVE HUA HIN BEACH RUN 2016. I had been thinking this year's run was for pussycats after previous runs had finished on top of our local Hin Lek Fai mountain. I had assumed they'd made the course easier to attract additional runners.

The Preserve Hua Hin movement is about restoring areas of Hua Hin back to nature for all to enjoy. They had been concentrating their efforts on the Hin Lek Fai area. Now down near the bus terminal in Khao Takiab, I've looked at a stretch of marshland for many years think there must be some nasties in there. It always smelt a bit as well.

I was sat waiting for Team Wado to return from their run this morning, when I found myself staring at a rather extravagant plinth errected for Bangkokians to take selfies at today's event.

I eventually decided too extravagant, and went to explore. The penny finally dropped, this is why the event was here this year. That smelly marshland was being transformed for all to enjoy. It was being transformed into an urban mangrove.

Concrete raised walkways had been created (with a lot more imagination than Pranburi Forest), Not as rustic as Pranburi Forest, but will require less maintenance. Channels have been dug to direct the water flow, and trees have been/are being planted. There are also a couple of nice rest areas in the new mangrove. All with the backdrop of Wat Khao Krai Lard (spelling varies wherever you look).

Walking back, I was to the rear of the many roadside bars and restaurants.

There was a fair bit of bird life in this new mangrove, but they wouldn't stay still long enough for me to photograph them.

A pleasant early morning stroll whilst waiting for the runner's return. Not really ready just yet for visitors, unless you're like me and like to see a before and after. I think this will be an asset to the area - well done Preserve Hua Hin.

Good report and good initiative on the part of those constructing it. I fear those bars/restaurants may start to throw trash out the back door and they're so close it can't help but contaminate the area. I hope they have a way to police and punish anything like that. Pete

Probably a very good point Pete. Trash Heroes recently did a clean with a local university at the Pranburi Forest, which is miles from civilisation. It was amazing how much rubbish they found.

Very interesting BB, thanks very much! Can you be specific about where the entrance is to help those of us that aren't over familiar with the area?

Quite a cheap day out. Jump on a Green Baht Bus in the centre of Hua Hin and go all the way to Khao Takiab. Get off at the end of the route - cost 10 Baht each way. Cross the road, and entrance is free.

Looks pretty wheelchair/ Pram friendly too from the pics. Not something that is thought about when designing things in Thailand.

LOL - the walkway is definitely wheelchair friendly. Unfortunately, to get onto the plinth I originally thought had been errected for yesterday's event as a Bangkokian photo opportunity, there is quite a big step. Such a shame because it will be quite a pleasant stroll when it's finished - a little bit of paradise, so close to civilisation.

Seeing improvised motorbike ramps all over town, I would think it will be easily rectified :D

LOL - it's a big fail on the getting up onto the initial plinth then. Obviously no Thai kerbside ingenuity :D

I was told this morning that there is a court case currently being discussed with the aim of clearing all those bars/restaurants from the 'motel' down to the temple.
