Police and soldiers began dismantling 21 illegal stalls and food shops on Prachuap Khiri Khan’s Pran Buri beach on Thursday morning, ending a months-long delay caused by owners who refused to vacate the public beach.
Pran Buri district chief Sutthiporn na Nakhon on Thursday led hundreds of police and troops to the popular beach where the owners had fought against the removal of 21 illegal structures for more than six months.
The premises -- four seafood restaurants, 16 souvenir stalls and one meditation centre -- were closed when the authorities arrived.
Earlier, a district panel that regulates Pran Buri beach had asked operators of all stalls found to have illegally encroached on the beach to remove them. The owners of 21 structures had refused
The unhappy stall owners and their workers gathered nearby to watch the demolition of their business premises.
The operator of the meditation centre donated the mats and other items to other people and denounced the dismantling of the structure as an attack on religion. However, there was no violence.
Mr Sutthiporn said officials would first remove the premises of those who had not resisted the order to move out.
Anyone who tried to obstruct the process would face legal action. The owners had six months notice to leave and all were fully aware their structures were built on a public beach, but still refused to leave, the assistant district chief said.
These illegal structures stretched along 3-4 kilometres of of the beach. After they were removed authorities would restore the beach to its natural beauty for the benefit of the public, not for particular individuals, said Mr Sutthiporn.

The authorities responsible for this part of the coastline are extremely vigilant and are quick to remove any illegal stalls as I previously have witnessed at Pak Nam Pran beach . Right or wrong they are illegal and should, in my opinion, be removed from the beach area soonest. The problem is sometimes exacerbated when the stalls are allowed to become established and then one understands the operators unwillingness to close down their profitable businesses.

? ? If the authorities are so "extremely vigilant and are quick to remove any illegal stalls" as you say then how are they "allowed to become established" ?magobligin wrote:The authorities responsible for this part of the coastline are extremely vigilant and are quick to remove any illegal stalls as I previously have witnessed at Pak Nam Pran beach . Isn't that comment a little picky, surely the focus should be on the fact that something is being done even it it did take some time. 10/10 to the local authorities for taking action

Have they removed the tuk tuk cafe on the beach near Evason Resort as well?
Re: Illegal stalls on Pran Buri beach being removed
Mr Singh's? Yes, it moved a couple of years ago to the approach road so it isn't a beach cafe anymore. That was due to the construction done for beach defence.aldo5 wrote:Have they removed the tuk tuk cafe on the beach near Evason Resort as well?
