Wat Khao Din

Post by Big Boy »

It’s getting to the time of year again when I get a little older. My wife likes to mark the occasion with a visit to the temple. When I go to any temple, I concentrate on what’s there, while my wife does her own thing.

This Temple is situated on the right about a mile past Soi 156, on the Hua Hin to Pranburi road.

My wife had wanted to stop here for a while now, so this was killing 2 birds with one stone.

This temple always looks to be set in large grounds when you look from the road. As I approached, I had to stop the car to take a couple of photos. The temples were looking lovely. However, this temple was still 50% a building site, so photographs without rubble would difficult.

I parked the car, and my wife went her own way. I concentrated on the temple buildings directly in front of me to start with. Closest to me was an ornately decorated Chinese Temple type of tower. I guess it would be called a Pagoda. This beautiful, and after climbing some stairs, I was able to cross a bridge to get inside. Unfortunately, it was Thai size inside, meaning there was no comfortable way for somebody over 6’ 5” tall to conquer the spiral staircase to the top.

Next was the main temple, which was on top of the hill (Khao). This was at the top of quite a few steps, although the climb was nothing compared to other climbs I’ve done on recent months. It was just a standard temple when I got there. The doors were locked, so I couldn’t get to look inside.

On the way up the steps I got a good view of 3 Buddha images being built on top of a new building on my right.

An interesting feature of the temple on the hill’s perimeter wall was all of the shrines built onto it. I had to watch where I was standing when walking around the perimeter wall.

Out the back of the temple, there is a small wooded area with a small shrine containing loads of Buddha images.

I then walked back down the hill to another temple, which had a crematorium built into the back of it. As I approached it, there must have been 100 young boys in Buddha robes enter this temple. I didn’t follow them in.

A bit further down the hill was another part of the construction going on – a grand entrance gate.

At this point, my wife phoned. She had finished, so time to go.

A pleasant temple to wander around. I’ll probably go back again to see it when the building work has finished.

8 years on, I returned to this temple, which is STILL under construction. What a huge difference - it's very picturesque now.
