Prachuap Khiri Khan scrambles to upgrade Singkhon Border Pass as permanent crossing point

Prachuap Khiri Khan considers upgrade of Singkhon Border Pass into permanent crossing point to promote economic growth and tourism.

Chief provincial district officer Somphorn Patchimphet said that Prachuap Khiri Khan province has called on Thai and Myanmar authorities to endorse the Regional Border Committee's (RBC) topographic survey on the Singkhorn Pass, which will see the border pass be upgraded to a permanent crossing point to accommodate the border area's growing economy and tourism industry.

The province has submitted a proposal to the Ministry of the Interior to consider allowing Myanmar nationals visiting Prachuap Khiri Khan to stay for 14 days for those with border passes and seven days for temporary passes, and to allow the access of eight districts in the province to promote mutual trade, investment and tourism.

They have been "upgrading" it for the past three years, that rustic old market is now a characterless block of empty units populated by a few bored furniture and gem dealers.

Disappointingly farangs still cant cross there because they cant get stamped out of Thailand.

It was such a disappointment going back there, having witnessed the 'jungle' setting of the original market and some parts previously there have gone altogether. And although had previously only visited in December and January, it used to get very busy, especially on a Saturday and parking could be a problem. But when I went there two Saturdays ago, arriving at 10.00, it was pretty empty and I was able to park right in front of the new soulless market.

Officials in Prachuap Khiri Khan province are expediting the construction of a border crossing office building at the Singkhon Pass.

The Governor of Prachuap Khiri Khan, Dr. Panlop Singhaseni, said provincial authorities are pushing forward with the plan to upgrade the Singkhorn Pass into a permanent border crossing point to support economic and tourism growths.

Dr. Panlop said the Department of Public Works and Town and Country Planning has received a 240-million-baht budget for the construction of the border crossing office building to facilitate the immigration process.

He went on to say that the upgrade of the Singkhon Pass will further stimulate trade and investment along the Thai-Myanmar border.

Slightly off topic but just a quick question. I was musing on a trip and note that Google Maps (even the US .com version) does not show any roads on the Myanmar side of the border, even though it does show a couple of restaurants 1 km or so inland.

How is that? If you change to satellite view you can see the roads. So I guess any trek across the border can't be assisted by GPS. Have Google agreed with Myanmar not to allow the roads to be plotted?

An aside: I tried to Google it but accidentally wrote "no toads in myanmar on google maps" and received some uninteresting information. I tried again and saw someone else had previously searched "what country is burma in". Oh dear....

Prachuap again seeking permanent border crossing

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

Prachuap Khiri Khan will again propose the upgrading of Singkhon border pass to a permanent checkpoint at next week's mobile cabinet meeting, to promote trade with Myanmar.

Provincial governor Pallop Sinhaseni said on Friday the cabinet was due to visit Phetchaburi for meetings with central provinces representatives from Monday to Tuesday, Manager online reported.

The province would take the opportuity to renew its push for the opening of a permanent border checkpoint, he said.
Singkhon pass is presently a special temporary checkpoint, meaning Myanmar citizens are allowed cross through it into Muang district and stay there for one night, while Thais can go to Myeik, formally Mergui, also for a one-night stay.

Officials and traders have long wanted the main gateway in the province to southern Myanmar to be a permanent checkpoint. The still undemarcated border line is the main stumbling block, although both Thai and Myanmar authorities have surveyed the area.

Two-way trade between Thailand and Myanmar through the checkpoint in Muang district jumped from 126 million baht in 2015 to 410 million baht last year.

Seafood was the main import from Myanmar, while Thailand shipped consumer products and fruit to Myanmar, according to a report on border trade in Prachuap Khiri Khan.
