My favourite day trip (South) is Ao Manao. I've moved this to the South of Hua Hin Forum - have a look around.

About an hour. Easily doable and back in a day.

Sam Roi Yod National park, spectacular, and lunch by the beach at Dolphin Bay.
Re: travel outside hua hin for the day
Yes, there are a whole load of places where you can get a meal on the sea-front between Paknampran and Sam Roi Yod. There's Mr Sings beach bar south of Paknampran that now has fresh seafood, a nice open restaurant just the other side of Khao Khalok and plenty of places along Dolphin Bay.
If you don't need western food, some of the small stalls that just have a couple of tables on the beach can be very good.
Also in Sam Roi Yod park itself there is a complex of seafood restaurants looking out onto a beach.

The best thing thing to do is to ask him, he's Thai. I'm sure he's heard of, or aware of some very good places. Just say, "Dad, it's all yours, lead on". Pete

I agree that Sam Roi Yod National Park is a great place to spend the day. Take the hike up to the big cave, but get a guide at the park. Took my family in late July, very hot. You can also eat in the park for a reasonable price.
