Researchers find 'catastrophic' coral die-off on Great Barrier Reef

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/world/ ... recent_box

SYDNEY: Australia's Great Barrier Reef suffered a "catastrophic die-off" of coral during an extended heatwave in 2016, threatening a broader range of reef life than previously feared, a report revealed Thursday.

Scientists said some 30% of the reef's coral died in the heatwave from March to November 2016, the first of an unprecedented two successive years of coral bleaching along the 2,300-kilometre World Heritage-listed reef off Australia's northeastern coast.

The study published Thursday in the journal Nature found that coral, which serve as habitats for other creatures, were particularly hard hit by the rising sea temperatures caused by global warming.

Terry Hughes, a report co-author and head of the Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies at Australia's James Cook University, told AFP the most susceptible to heat exposure were branching corals -- table-shaped creatures that provide nooks and crannies for fish nurseries and fisheries.

Corals that were more likely to survive the warmer sea temperatures were smooth and melon-shaped, he said. While they were good calcifiers that add volume to reefs, they were "not very useful as habitable providers".

"So there is a shift in the mix of species and the overall loss of corals has a broader impact on all the creatures that depend on the corals for food and habitats," Hughes said.

His research centre said the new study showed that corals on the northern Great Barrier Reef "experienced a catastrophic die-off" following the 2016 heatwave.

"The coral die-off has caused radical changes in the mix of coral species on hundreds of individual reefs, where mature and diverse reef communities are being transformed into more degraded systems, with just a few tough species remaining," said Andrew Baird, another of the report's authors.

The scientists said the focus should be on protecting the surviving corals, which number about a billion after the two bleaching events in 2016 and 2017.

"They are the ones that are going to refeed and repopulate an altered reef into the future," Hughes said, adding that one way to maintain their health was through improving water quality by reducing coastal pollution.

Efforts to curb climate change, such as through the Paris Agreement to cap global warming at under 2.0 degrees Celsius (35.6 degrees Fahrenheit) below pre-industrial levels, were also critical.

"We've now seen four bleaching events (1998, 2002, 2016 and 2017) on the Great Barrier Reef with one degree (Celsius) of global average warming," he said.

"We are on a pathway where we are committed to a different Barrier Reef. If we continue with business-as-usual emissions, then I don't think the reef can survive."

Coral reefs make up less than 1% of Earth's marine environment, but are home to an estimated 25% of ocean life, acting as nurseries for many species of fish.

Fake or Fortune, BBC1 and BBC4. Presented by the thinking man's delight Fiona Bruce, and a couple of poncy art experts who would have been stuck out on the wing shivering in baggy shorts during a school rugby match, praying the ball doesn't come anywhere near them. But it's really not about them, it's about the art and the process.

I find it fascinating.
Fake or Fortune? is a BBC One television series which examines the provenance and attribution of notable artworks.[1] Since the first series aired in 2011, Fake or Fortune? has drawn audiences of 5 million viewers in the UK[2], the highest for an arts show in that country.[3]

Fake or Fortune? was created by art dealer and art historian Philip Mould and producer Simon Shaw, inspired by Mould’s book Sleuth (2009), which was the programme’s working title during the development phase.[4] It is co-presented by Mould and journalist Fiona Bruce, with specialist research carried out by Bendor Grosvenor during the first five seasons.[5] Forensic analysis and archival research is carried out by various fine art specialists.[6][7] Each series first aired on BBC One, except the third series accidentally first aired on SVT.[8] The seventh series aired in August and September 2018.

I was and still am a huge fan of The Larry Sanders Show with Garry Shandling.

A 2018 HBO documentary, The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling is well worth a looksee.

Understanding Lennon/McCartney

This is a must see for any Beatles fan.
A five part masterpiece, only available on You Tube, which gives a really good insight on the chemistry between the two, and the band from the beginning and acrimonious end and carries on into their solo careers up to Lennons untimely death.

I've just watched The Serengeti Rules on BBC4. It goes beyond the usual doom and gloom of what we've done to the planet and has a serious look at how we can fix it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Serengeti_Rules
The Serengeti Rules is a 2018 American documentary film directed by Nicolas Brown, and based on the book by Sean B. Carroll. The film explores the discoveries of five pioneering scientists—Tony Sinclair, Mary E. Power, Bob Paine, John Terborgh, and Jim Estes—whose decades of research laid the groundwork for modern ecology and offer hope that environmentalists today may able to “upgrade” damaged ecosystems by understanding the rules that govern them.

I'm part way through season 2 of Britain's Largest Warship. Maybe my maritime background, and the fact I was involved in the early planning of this project, but I'm enjoying it a lot.

I was involved long before real costs were known. We were basically creating a hypothetical wants list - I'd imagine a lot of what we asked for was scrapped/found to be too expensive or was found to be obsolete before going into service.

The following has just been shown on cable TV. Basically a scientific expedition from the source waters of the Okavango Delta in Angola, right down into Botswana.

https://www.nationalgeographic.org/projects/okavango/

The Okavango Delta is the main source of water for a million people and is one of the most biodiverse places in Africa. It supports the world’s largest remaining elephant population as well as lions, cheetahs, wild dogs, hundreds of species of birds, and much more.

While the Okavango Delta is protected within Botswana, the greater Okavango Basin, which includes the critical rivers and lakes that supply the delta, are not. These source waters are under increasing threats from deforestation, uncontrolled fire, the rising commercial bushmeat trade, and unchecked development. If these waters remain unprotected, the future of the Okavango Delta is at risk.
