Archa is a synthetic blend of chemicals in water! At least Chang/Leo has some real ingredients in amongst the mix!

The Isaan BBQ place on Phetchkasem in front of TMB bank used to have large Leos @45 baht, that's the cheapest I've ever seen. Perfect with spicy somtam.

Quality is subjective, so I'll leave that out.

Even in Binta a small bottle is, what, 80bt? That works out at £1.70 odd for a 330ml bottle. Double that up and you get 2 for £3.40 - which is about the cheapest you can find a pint of larger for in the UK, and you've got around 100ml more content.

In Soi 80 bars, and in restaurants the beers are around 50bt a bottle, so you're way below UK prices. I've noticed the price of draft beer at Montri is also around the same price (45bt for 330ml if I remember correctly). Can't speak for the other bars in the area, but I'm guessing thay're around about the same price.

Plus Thai larger tents to be particularly strong, so once a couple of cubes of ice have melted in your glass you've probably got yourself about 25% extra free! ;)

Irrespective of whether beers prices are similar to, or slightly less than you would pay in the UK, I personally feel 80 for a small Chang is a complete ripoff. If mom and pop shops can sell them for 25 to 28 baht, then the bars are adding a hefty markup. I realize they have rents to pay and etc, but a hike of 55 baht is a bit much if you ask me. It's alright paying 80 a beer if you're a tourist, but when you actually live here? I know several Farang that avoid the 80 baht beer areas exactly for that reason. They live here, and as such, they need to watch there spending. Sadly, our one and only local bar also charges tourist prices, and I can't help wondering how much business they lose given that there are so many expats living permanently in the area now.

A very good point about ex-pats having to watch their expenditure, whilst us guys who come on our hols do not have to watch the prices quite so closely.
In the UK now it is possible to find pubs with cheap drinks, and not just Wetherspoons, but also in HH it is easily possible to find decent bars with very reasonable drinks prices, although perhaps only till 9 or 10pm.(Papyita 55bht, 9pm for one)
This year I hope to be coming for two x 6 week trips and I will be watching my expenditure more closely than if I were here for just 3 weeks, but that is all prices and not just beer prices. :)

a bar selling beer at happy hour prices paying over 30000 baht a month rent needs to shift 40 beers a day just to cover rent never mind running costs electric etc including during low season ,
and the owner makes nothing until costs are covered so you can see why prices are what they are ,its not the owners fault the landlords charge so much ,i bet every bar on bintabaht is running on very little profit by the time exspenses are covered

I'm okay with most Oz beers in Oz. Some good choices and I happily move from Hahn, to Tooheys red to Crown and so on. But the stuff sold in the UK is mainly brewed under license in the UK now, so yes, it is crap. As now is Tiger Beer sadly, which is brewed in Edinborough but still sold as a 'premier' lager.

My nearest B&M store has started selling VB stubby six packs, imported ffrom Oz for £3.50, which is good value and when I'm up that way I pop in for some. No doubt at some stage thhat will disappear from their shelves just as Beer Lao did, but whilst its there......

Try drinking in Dubai. Okay we ar elucky that a Muslim country allows us to drink. Bottle of Corona typically AED 36 which is 288 baht/ Pint in Meat Company 370 baht-ish. Don't forget that for your 80 baht bottle you get to laugh at the tourists who are unaware of the katois. Bargain.

Jeez! From that post you make it sound like the bar owners at Binta are laughing all the way to the bank. The amount of times you see bars closing/changing hands/whatever, couples by the fact that for most of the year you'll walk around and find most bars empty, would indicate that even at 80bt a bottle isn't enough to sustain your average bar in the area.

Yes. as residents we have to watch our pennies. But that's not the fault of the bars. I doubt them reducing their prices to even 60bt a bottle would cause a massive influx of expats into the bars, certainly not enough to make up for all the money they'd loose against all the bottles sold the the tourists at the reduced price.

I also rarely go to Binta because of the prices but I don't for one second believe they are ripping anybody off. I occasionally go there when I'm a little more flush than normal and up for a 'night out', because the atmosphere is still much better than Soi 80.

The fact that your local bar also charges the tourist prices is a different issue all together, and places out of town charging those prices is a little off considering they don't have the kind of rent overheads of other places.

They don't have shift 40 beers a day if you take into account bar fines and beer bought at full prices. In addition to the watered cocktails... I'm sure it's a fine line between break even and profits all the same... I often think guy's buy bars for something to do, company and ego's...

tuppence, similar story here in Doha, though worse.......pint of Stella at The Admirals Bar at the Ritz Carlton QAR50/Thb430, though was at Champions Sports Bar at the Marriott yesterday for happy hour and pint of Heineken or Kilkenny only QAR25/Thb215.......bargain :?

I don't think you're far wrong, it's kind of a pipe dream for most guys to retire to a place in the sun and open a bar / nightclub. That's why when the opportunity arises so many guys, who've had no experience of running a bar or even their own business, jump in with both feet and a "if you build it they will come" attitude.
