Blue Angel - sock lady tip scam
Blue Angel - sock lady tip scam
Recently took our 1st time Thailand visitors to the Blue Angel ladyboy cabaret show.
The show was OK but during the performance an elderly falang lady, wearing socks who sat in the audience continually jumped off her seat and put 20 baht notes into the bra of the performers during the show. She sat next to other customers and engaged them in conversation and was giving the impression that she was a customer who was enjoying the show.
Some customers took her lead and they too put money into the bra's of the performers, who unfortunately have by now developed a greed for the customers money, as they brazenly present a plastic container marked "tips" to every customer near the end of the show and expect everyone to put money into the container before the show ends.
When the show ends, the elderly falang lady who is about 65/70, short grey hair, open long sleeve shirt, grubby T shirt, keys on a neck loop, wearing socks and sandals hangs about until the customers disperse and then she pops back into the club and emerges with the "tip box". She counts the money, takes her money back and then shares the rest out between the performers.
So, beware the smiling sock lady as she attends every performance.

My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

She's probably just a basket case that they have come across and using for their own entertainment value who is completely lost. We all know how they love to parade the freaks here on TV and elsewhere all in the name of slapstick.

Don't know Darth - I kept an eye out for her after these posts and did spot a likely looking farang but not at the show.
What bugs me more is the fake monks who continue to wander the streets at night. I've seen them in HuaHin and Bangkok. Trouble is that tourists are easily taken in by this scam, not realising that monks only collect alms at dawn. I've even seen a 'fake' monk flash just a tiny plastic bowl for money while brushing past tourists on the sidewalk. A genuine monk would never risk his robes touching anyone else.

Thanks for the tip on the monks. Korean monks are completely different**, and I wouldn't have thought anything wrong with giving a monk alms while out and about during the day. (**There are a couple Korean monks at the temple near my apartment that drive $50,000 cars; so much for casting off material wealth and living as minimalists)margaretcarnes wrote:What bugs me more is the fake monks who continue to wander the streets at night. I'm trying to keep up on current scams, and know enough not to rent jetskis and whatnot, and a few of the other well-known scams. Nice to discover a few more before getting "rooked".
However, having said that, I'm more worried about my short stay in Beijing than I am about anything in LOS. Other than the Tea Scam and knowing not taking cabs anywhere, I'm clueless there.
