Deciding the winner in a draw.

Golden and Silver goal systems have both been droped but don't cater for a nobody scoring in extra time situations anyway. Assuming extra time is continued and it is still a draw, how should the result be decided. Penalties are as much about luck and nerves as anything else with quite often the inferior team wiinning on penalties. The recent English FA Cup and the Brazil v Italy World Cup Final being two examples.

Sorry Guess but I disagree with all your options. I think extra time should be only 2 X 10 minutes played without goalkeepers. If still a draw after 20 minutes, teams should revert to 7 a side (no goalies, and minus players for previous red cards of course). 1st team to score wins. A goal would come within 5 minutes. The main flaw in this idea is that a referee might have a problem refereeing 7 a side because the ball would be all over the place, but it would be exiting and fun.

I really enjoyed watching the games that have had the Golden goal scenario, makes for an attacking finish to a game, at least you know you have to score to win. A little unfair if still deadlocked after a long time, no matter how fit the players, nobody can run around forever.

The penalty system can be harsh on the team that has played better, but everyone knows this is the system and if they haven’t prepared, or suffer bad luck, or have SHI(L)TS in goal. ..I’ve never had a team I want to win do so on a penalty shoot out.
You could make the whole thing interesting by letting the goalie have his home supporters behind him giving it their all, lonesome penalty taker knowing if he missed he’d have a long walk back facing the wrath of his supporters at the other end.

Panel of Judges? Bit like the Eurovision song contest, can you see judges from the Welsh, Irish, Scottish FA’s giving a judgment to England.

The points system seems intriguing, a little unfair on the team who already had a penalty and red card against a player, that resulted in the draw, then being penalised for the sending off. Not only that but after the first corner conceded, I can hear it now...-â€

Good analysis by JD! I think I would like to retain the penalties, but in a slightly different format; ALL the players remaining on the pitch at the end of extra time take one penalty each rather than just the initial 5 selected. This means that a team who have had a player sent off will of course be at a disadvantage but so be it. The chances are that there would be a winner in this scenario but if it was still level then you would move to sudden death, going in the same order as first selected.
Another possibility is that the team with the best goal celebration wins (which virtually guarantees that any team that Peter Crouch and Robbie Keane play for will never win!)

The way Steve Gerrard took his penalty in the FA cup final makes me wonder why he is not the number 1 taker for England, however, if you had Lampard, Gerrard, Owen, Downing, Roony (if fit), and Beckham - I can't imagine any of them missing. Oops, just remember the divit that sent Beckham's kick skyward .... oops, oops, oops! (He couldn't do that again ... could he?)!

Present systems is ok. This is harsh habit, but somehow is owing decision.
