Thailand MotoGP at Buriram

Post by Vital Spark »

That'll be a nice excuse for a trip northeast if it comes off.

B300m set aside to bid for MotoGP
The cabinet on Tuesday allocated 300 million baht to pay for the right to organise MotoGP, the world's motorcycle racing championship, for three years.

The budget would be for the annual rights fee of 100 million baht for the expected organisation of the FIM Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix (MotoGP) from 2018 to 2020, government spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd said. For organisational costs, the government planned to later raise a fund with the private sector.

The Tourism and Sports Ministry proposed the project as Dorna Sports Group, the rights owner, planned to increase the number of host countries of the popular championship to 21 next year from 18.

Finland was already additionally included and the rights owner would choose two more countries. Thailand, Kazakhstan, Indonesia and Hungary are vying for the right, Lt Gen Sansern said.

Thailand's victory will boost the country's image because the tournaments are broadcast live to over 600 million viewers in more than 200 countries. It will also boost confidence among tourists and investors, he said.

As Buriram United International Circuit was viewed as the only standard venue in the country for the championship, the spokesman said income could be distributed in Buri Ram and nearby provinces.

The participation would also promote the motorcycle industry, related industries and benefit motorsports in the country, he said.

Application for the right must be officially filed within next month, Lt Gen Sansern said.

Buri Ram track ‘very boring’ for champ Rossi
Nine-time World Grand Prix winner Valentino Rossi dismissed the Buriram International Circuit as “not interesting”, as Thailand bids to host its maiden MotoGP at the venue in October next year, according to an article on motorsport.com on Thursday.

The Italian star visited the circuit two years ago for a promotional activity with his sponsor Yamaha and was not happy with the venue, according to his interview with the website journalist.

“The track is not interesting. It’s very boring, has not a lot of corners, just long straights. I think it’s not the best place to go. And also where is the track is quite bad, it’s far from everything,” he said in the article.

Thailand earlier this month got the green light from MotoGP promoter Dorna Sport to host the world’s premier motorcycle racing event from 2018-20. The first edition will be held from October 5-7 next year. Thailand will have to pay Bt400 million as licence fee for three years. Bt100 million is being raised from the public sector and the rest from the private sector.

The 38-year-old Italian was also quoted as saying: “So I’m not very happy to go to Thailand, essentially, on that track. But if we have to go, we’ll go.”

Buriram is the only racing circuit in Thailand which meets FIM standards and has hosted international races such as the World Super Bike, Asia Road Racing and GT Series Asia. – The Nation

Thailand Grand Prix in Buri Ram will be 'bigger and better'

The second PTT Thailand Grand Prix is expected to be bigger and better than the inaugural edition, organisers said on Thursday.

This year's event will again be held at Chang International Circuit in Buri Ram from Oct 4-6.

Last year's race weekend was the most attended and voted the best of the season, with more than 220,000 people passing through the turnstiles over three days.

Honda's five-time world champion Marc Marquez was crowned the first Thailand Grand Prix champion.

"With its huge success last year, the 2019 PTT Thailand Grand Prix is expected to attract more fans. This will help generate more income for the country," Sports Authority of Thailand governor Gongsak Yodmani told a press conference.

Tanaisiri Charnwittayarom, managing director of Chang International Circuit, said this year's race will be more competitive.

"We are confident that we will be able to take care of fans from around the world better this year because of our experience from organising last year's event," he said.

"We will use the experience to make it a better event."

Tickets starting from 2,000 baht are available at 7-Eleven shops and www.allticket.com.

However, Tanaisiri said grandstand tickets have been sold out.

It maybe 'bigger and better' but I'll stick to the Malaysian GP which is half the price for tickets and accommodation.

Road improvements nearly completed for October event in Buri Ram

Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob on Sunday welcomed the upcoming MotoGP Buriram 2019 and gave assurances that authorities in this lower northeastern province would be fully prepared to ensure the success of the international event scheduled to take place on Oct 4-6.

Mr Saksayam was briefed by permanent secretary for transport Chaiwat Thongkamkoon about the ministry's preparations for the upcoming race during his visit to the province.

The Department of Highways is speeding up the widening of the road linking Highway 2445 and Krasang Intersection to ensure it is finished before the event, and work on Highway 218 Buri Ram-Nang Rong is completed, he said.

The Department of Land Transport has prepared shuttle buses and improved Buri Ram Bus Terminal to accommodate visitors, he said.

Shuttle buses will depart from Buri Ram Airport to Chang Arena Stadium, from Buri Ram Railway Station to Chang Arena Stadium, from Buri Ram Bus Terminal to Chang International Circuit, and from Buri Ram Provincial Administrative Organisation to Chang International Circuit, he said.

Mr Saksayam said the Department of Airports has beefed up security and arranged extra flights and waiting areas for passengers, while the State Railway of Thailand will lay on extra train carriages and implement a ticket reservation application and QR code payment service.

He also instructed the Department of Land Transport to finish 13 construction projects, including 890 kilometres of new highways to accommodate the amount of traffic expected over the next five years.

Mr Saksayam also said he will submit three key infrastructure proposals to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on during his visit.

"Dual carriageways will facilitate locals and reduce accidents. Moreover, we are going to construct a second passenger building at Buri Ram Airport as well as extend the runway for large aircraft under a 750-million-baht -budget," he said.

MotoGP could roar back to Buri Ram in November

https://www.bangkokpost.com/sports/1948 ... n-november (Video and photo at link)

Thailand hopes to hold its MotoGP race in late November after an eight-month delay caused by the coronavirus pandemic, officials said Wednesday as they announced a bid to host until 2025.

The kingdom's third fixture on the premier motorbike racing calendar was slated for March 20-22, but the event was axed as the disease started spreading rapidly around the world.

Officials have since gradually reopened the country's borders to business travellers and medical tourists, with some restrictions.

Organisers are now eyeing a rescheduled race for November 21-22, said deputy government spokeswoman Traisuree Traisaranakul.

"It depends on conditions like flights, the opening of airports and the readiness of the people" entering the country, she added.

Thailand will also submit a bid to continue hosting MotoGP for five more years, with the government paying for half of the 50 million euro ($56 million) copyright, Ms Traisuree said.

The northeastern city of Buri Ram hosted its first MotoGP race in 2018.

Besides attracting thousands of motorsport fans to Thailand, it brought in three billion baht each of the last two years it was held, according to official figures.

Thailand has recorded around 3,100 Covid-19 cases since the start of the year -- a low toll given it was the first country outside of China to detect the disease.

This year's virus-delayed MotoGP season will finally begin on July 19 at the Jerez circuit in Spain.
