Pit lane fire drama halts Malayasian GP practice session

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/sports/ ... ce-session

SEPANG, Malaysia - The first practice session for the Malaysian Grand Prix was halted in dramatic fashion after just 11 minutes on Friday when Kevin Magnussen's Renault burst into flames in the pit lane.

Magnussen, who had completed just one lap, was forced to leap to safety when fire broke out in his engine outside the Renault garage.
Pit crew and fire marshals were quickly on the scene with extinguishers to quell the flames.

But with fuel appearing to be leaking across hot engine parts, the fire reignited several times before it was finally brought under control.

With foam from extinguishers and smoke sweeping across the pit lane, organisers had no choice other than to raise the red flags to halt the session.

Magnussen was unhurt, although one member of the Renault pit crew seemed to be suffering slightly from the effects of inhaling smoke.

The session got back under way after a 15-minute delay.

Brilliant race, and not just because Ricardo won! What is all this BS with Hamilton? Sure, bad luck, but he is not the only one that has bad luck. He is a self centered twat.

Vettel angers rivals with F1 collision

https://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/sport ... ion/#page1

Even for a team that has become accustomed to disappointment in recent years, the outcome of Sunday's Malaysian Grand Prix must have been a crushing one for Ferrari.

Sebastian Vettel, last year's winner at the Sepang International Circuit, caused a collision at the first corner that ended his race - and incurred a grid penalty for next weekend's race - while his teammate Kimi Raikkonen finished a distant and uncompetitive fourth.

But the worst outcome of all was that Red Bull, piloted by Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo, won the race.

All season, Ferrari and Red Bull have closely fought to be the best of the rest behind Mercedes, but on the only two occasions in which Mercedes faltered, it was Red Bull that was there to capitalise with victories, while Ferrari is left staring at a second winless season in three years.

The race was over almost as soon as it had begun for Vettel. He saw a gap on the inside of Mercedes' Nico Rosberg at the first corner and went for it, but left his braking too late. The Ferrari touched the Red Bull of Max Verstappen, and then hit Rosberg's car, sending the German into a spin that dropped him to the back of the field.

"I just got t-boned by a four-time world champion, Rosberg said. "Out of control.

Verstappen also pinned the blame for the collision entirely on Vettel.
"Sebastian just dived up the inside, went really deep, and there was definitely no space for that,'' Verstappen said.

Vettel was left with a broken suspension and parked his Ferrari trackside, with this race over. It was a stark contrast to this event last season when he took his first victory for the Italian team.

It got worse after the race when he was slapped with a three grid-place penalty for next weekend's Japanese Grand Prix.

"I did my best under braking but I couldn't avoid the impact, Vettel said. "It was an unfortunate chain reaction which ruined my race and Nico's one. I can't do more than apologise to Nico, because the accident had nothing to do with him.

Crickey! I got the cap back again, but I'm so far down the bottom of the grid there's no way I can claw myself up (bump others off the track...) to get myself anywhere near the top. :(

Great to see Ricciardo back on the top step, and good to see Button earning some points - two really nice guys. The Hamster's comments post blowing up were interesting, to say the least. He obviously thinks that there's some kind of conspiracy going on to prevent him from becoming World Champion. Get real, mate! These things happen.

Really looking forward to wonderful Suzuka - it's going to be fun if it rains...

Surly Hamilton blames 'guy above' for F1 engine woe

https://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/sport ... woe/#page1

AFP on October 6, 2016, 6:07 pm

Suzuka (Japan) (AFP) - Lewis Hamilton cut a surly figure in Suzuka on Thursday, fiddling with his phone during a news conference and complaining a higher power caused his dramatic engine fire in Malaysia.

As his Sepang victory hopes went up in smoke last weekend, the world champion appeared to point to a Mercedes conspiracy against him in a furious rant, fuming: "Someone doesn't want me to win this year."

The Briton, who has seen Mercedes rival Nico Rosberg open a 23-point lead with five races left this season, has since gone to great lengths to deny any suggestion of skullduggery, posting several photos on social media praising his "awesome car crew".

By Thursday, Hamilton was blaming God for his mechanical issues -- claiming that was what he meant all along.

"It hasn't changed, nothing's changed," he sniffed.
"It appears currently the 'guy above' doesn't really want me to win right now. But I've made a point on my Instagram so I don't really have much more to say about it."

A distracted Hamilton played with his phone throughout the press conference. He took a selfie and photos of fellow drivers on mobile app Snapchat, giving himself bunny ears and Toro Rosso's Carlos Sainz a "Bambi" face.

When asked by reporters what he was up to, Hamilton gave a withering look, at first pretending not to hear the question.
..............................>>>>>
Meanwhile, Mercedes discovered the cause of Hamilton's engine failure following exhaustive investigations, revealing
that a big-end bearing failure in the crankshaft led to the blow-out and sabotaged a race he was dominating.

It was Hamilton's third power unit failure of the year and he will revert to the engine he used in Singapore this weekend. Rosberg will use the same one he ran in Malaysia.
