WA surfing champion Taj Burrow announces retirement

https://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/wa/a/ ... ent/#pause

WA surfer Taj Burrow has announced his retirement after 18 years on the professional circuit.
Burrow, 37, told World Surf League he had lost the hunger to win after becoming a father and the Fiji Pro in June would be his last tour event.

“I feel like I don’t really have the hunger to win anymore,” Burrow told WSL.
“But losing still hurts just as much, so it doesn’t really add up. I would rather let it go.”

Burrow qualified for the ASP World Tour as an 18-year-old and became the youngest surfer to win a national title.
He has collected 11 event wins during professional career, including the Billabong Pipeline Masters and three Quicksilver Pro titles.

Aussie surf pioneer Midget Farrelly dies

https://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/sport ... ies/#page1

By Scott Bailey - AAP on August 8, 2016, 10:36 am

Legendary surfer Bernard `Midget' Farrelly was a pioneer for Australia's current dominance in the sport.

Farrelly, who died on Sunday aged 71, was the sport's first world champion when he claimed the title in front of more than 60,000 fans at Manly beach in 1964.
Since then, Australians have won 31 of a possible 94 world championships across both the male and female titles.

And as far as Surfing Australia chief executive Andrew Stark is concerned, that is because of Farrelly's influence.
"And there's been a lot of surfers since him in terms of Nat Young and Tom Carroll and Barton Lynch and Mick Fanning."
Farrell began surfing as a six-year-old and remained heavily involved in the sport until his late years.

Farrelly was inducted as an inaugural athlete member to The Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1985, before later entering the surfing walk of fame at California's Huntington Beach in 2007.

My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

In the 80s Surfer magazine published their first list of surfing's most influential people. A former surfer took exception at some in the top 10. I explained the Gidget TV show introduced most Americans to the sport, Bruce Brown's film Endless Summer was the first widely seen realistic footage of surfing, that after the Aussies saw the maneuvers George Greenough could do riding a 5' board on his knees they started the short board revolution - and if wasn't for Jack O'Neil the sport would have progressed at a snail's pace because in most parts of the world surfing would be limited to 4 months a year. A former living legend, he will remain a legend.

The 'Kelly' in the video is Kelly Slater. Holds the distinction of being the youngest champion in the World Surf League. And the oldest. And the most titles in a row. And the most titles. In short, he knows how to surf.
Kelly's Wave is open for business. The wave can be configured to go right or left. All the videos on the home page are various people going right on various wave riding devices. Except one video. The one at the top. For the man who was undeniably at the top during his era. The first left went to Mr. Pipeline.

Surfer Andrew Cotton has back broken by 60-foot wave

http://www.bbc.com/sport/41926977

"A British surfer has broken his back after being crushed by a 60-foot wave off a beach in Portugal.

Andrew Cotton, 38, from Braunton in Devon, was at Nazare - renowned for its wild conditions - when he was filmed being wiped-out by the Atlantic wave.

He was rushed to hospital in a neck brace and has a fractured spine but is expected to make a full recovery.

"It won't put me off. Riding the big waves is what we live for," Cotton told BBC Sport."...............

Didn't want to sit through the BBC advert in the link above. Here is an ad free view of the wipeout.

Never seen anyone spit out of white water like that.

One of the challenges of surfing The Right in Western Australia, besides having to be either certifiably insane or need a wheelbarrow to carry your big brass clankers, is the waves that form at the base of the face of a large wave. Between tide and size, The Right was so big such waves didn't form. Warning: Music videoish at the start:

Surviving a 3 wave hold down in huge surf separates those who belong in the water and those who mistakenly believed they did. He survived:

The yearly dance with death is in progress. Many more videos on You Tube. Search for Mavericks surfing 2018.

EDIT:....but the actual yearly competition has been postponed until January (tentative) as the waves and conditions simply too dangerous at present.

Two have died surfing Mavericks. Both did so before Patagonia invented the PSI (Personal Surf Inflation) Vest, designed to get you to the surface during a hold down. Patagonia sells only to those with level 2 certification from the Big Wave Risk Assessment Group (BWRAG). Apparently Patagonia don't want to be blamed for deaths of people who mistakenly thought they knew how to handle surfing when it's REALLY BLEEPING BIG.
