Unai Emery set to be appointed new Arsenal manager replacing Arsene Wenger https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/44203679

Arsenal are set to appoint Unai Emery as their new manager.

Manchester City assistant manager and former Gunners captain Mikel Arteta was strong favourite to succeed Arsene Wenger.

Emery emerged as the unanimous choice following a recruitment process in which all candidates were spoken to.

The 46-year-old Spaniard is available after leaving Paris St-Germain where he won one Ligue 1 title and four domestic cups in two seasons in charge.

Previously he guided Sevilla to three consecutive Europa League triumphs between 2014 and 2016.

Meticulous, experienced, successful - and still a risk: Phil McNulty on Arsenal's surprise choice
Emery announced last month he would leave French champions PSG when his contract expired at the end of the season. He was replaced by former Borussia Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel, who had also been linked with the Arsenal job.

Emery's English is not completely fluent but the language barrier is not expected to be a problem.

An announcement and news conference are expected later this week.

After Wenger's departure was announced, the betting odds on Emery replacing him were at one stage as long as 66-1 - placing him behind the likes of former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood.

Other candidates included Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri and former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti, as well as former Arsenal players Arteta, Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira.

The recruitment process was led by Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis, head of football relations Raul Sanllehi and head of recruitment Sven Mislintat - though the final decision would be down to majority shareholder and owner Stan Kroenke.

Wenger, 68, left the Gunners at the end of season after 22 years in charge, during which he won three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups, including two Doubles.

Analysis
Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright on BBC Radio 5 live

What's going on at Arsenal? Where's Unai Emery come from? I can't get it out of my head.

You'd have thought that by now they would have known exactly what's going on.

Emery has had loads of money to spend at Paris St-Germain and now has to come to Arsenal with £50m with a bunch of players who have been playing in second gear.

His coaching ability will have to get going instantly and he will have to find some gems instantly.

I wouldn't be disgruntled as an Arsenal fan about Unai Emery, I think the fact he's come out of left field when everyone's thinking 'it's going to be Arteta', that's the only problem. If we do see a difference in intensity, drive and consistency everybody will get onside and that's all Arsenal fans want to see.

Quite surprised to be honest, his appointment has really come out of nowhere and he's barely been mentioned in AFC blog land.
He's young and has a decent CV and I think there will be a bit more cash available than the £50 million mentioned in the report.
He's certainly got his work cut out from day one, that's for sure . . . . . . . . onwards and upwards

Early days to say anything, yet. Surely he had more money available at PSG than he will at Arsenal. That 50 mil. is not a transfer cash, it is what will be winnings after the season from salaries etc. Transfer kit will be more but nearly as much as at PSG. Whoever comes in will not have an easy task. Hope for the best but if you look at ManU, it's not an easy thing to replace someone who's been in charge for more than 2 decades.

A better option than Arteta I think. He managed Valencia well on a shoestring budget so I guess he has experience on that front.

Plus he’s a Europa League specialist. Since we are a long way off being a top 4 club at the moment his experience there will no doubt bode well.

The main thing is that the club now seems to have a modern football management structure in place. Whilst these changes will certainly take time, there is no doubt that the club can move forward again without being held back by Wenger and his stubborn ways.

Onwards and upwards.

West Ham: Manuel Pellegrini named new manager at London Stadium https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/44163423

West Ham have appointed one of the world's "most respected" football coaches in Manuel Pellegrini, according to joint chairman David Sullivan.

Pellegrini, 64, has signed a three-year deal at the London Stadium.

The former Manchester City and Real Madrid manager left his job with Hebei China Fortune over the weekend and succeeds David Moyes.

"I am excited about this project. My mentality is always to have a winning mentality," said Pellegrini.

"I think that West Ham had a difficult season last season and I hope that next season we are going to play football that will delight the fans. I always play attacking football and we must try to reach important targets in the season.

"I am sure that, with the players we have in this moment in the squad, and bringing maybe another four or five in, we are going to have a strong team."

Chilean Pellegrini, who had been a priority target from the start of West Ham's search for a new manager, will be joined at London Stadium by assistant Ruben Cousillas.

He replaces former Everton and Manchester United manager Moyes, who was appointed West Ham boss in November 2017 but released at the end of his contract after guiding West Ham to 13th place.

"Manuel brings a reputation for attacking football and getting the best out of his players," said Sullivan.

"We believe he will attract new talent to the London Stadium as well as improving the current squad.

"Manuel is the first West Ham United manager to have a Premier League title on his CV, and we believe his experience, quality and proven record of taking teams forward quickly will ensure that he is successful here."

West Ham had explored the possibility of hiring Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez, however they quickly concluded it would be hugely difficult for the Spaniard to leave St James' Park.

Pellegrini, who was on a huge contract in China, has agreed to take a pay cut but it is anticipated he will become the highest paid manager in West Ham's history.

Sullivan had previously said he intended to hire someone who had experience at the highest level.

Pellegrini won the 2013-14 Premier League title and two EFL Cups during his three years at Manchester City, in addition to taking the club to the Champions League semi-finals.

West Ham have experienced huge problems during their first two seasons after leaving Upton Park.

They won just seven home Premier League games this season, a campaign which was marred by crowd trouble at London Stadium.

Five fans were banned for life by the club for running on to the pitch during their home fixture with Burnley on 10 March.

Other fans were also banned for life for throwing coins or objects "with intent to injure or harm"......

Fulham have been promoted to the Premier League after beating Aston Villa in the Championship play-off final at Wembley.

They were up for 13 straight years last time. Let's hope they match or exceed that record.

To me Craven Cottage is the most beautiful football ground in the UK. What a setting and history! Fulham FC has received permission to tear down the riverside stands and build a two tier stand increasing the seating from 25,700 to 29,600. Construction to start summer of 2019.

What history the place has. Long before the stadium being built and becoming Fulham FC home stadium in 1896, it was part of Anne Boleyn's hunting grounds. Full read here if interested. Pete  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craven_Cottage#Pre-Fulham

Congrats to Fulham. They play some nice football and its good to see them back in the Premiership.
There manager,Slavisa Jokanovic, has done an excellent job there. He took Watford up a few years back and was then sacked because he asked for a pay rise.....I wonder how Watford would be doing now if they had kept him on ?

OK,I know this isn't the Premiership but it made me laugh...... :D

If I'm not mistaken the 3 teams coming up get a baptism of fire by being matched with the top 3 teams from the previous year. Maybe I'm just imagining it but I remember something similar happening last season? Pete

Coincidence....
Brighton played Man City who came 3rd the season before....Newcastle played the Spuds who came 2nd....but Huddersfield played Crystal Palace who came something like 14th or 15th,I think.

My Great Uncle used to own a house in the road on the left (Finlay Street) heading away from the ground to Fulham Palace Road (both sides of my family are from Fulham) and when I was younger, in the days when grounds opened their gates at half time, I'd visit him with a mate for a cuppa and then nip into the ground to watch the 2nd half. But only when Chelsea were away and before I was allowed to travel to away games.

It's also good that as a result of the redevelopment of the Riverside Stand, that the stretch of river there will open to the public.

And to think, if Fulham had accepted Gus Mears offer to relocate the club to the nearby newly developed Stamford Bridge, Chelsea would never have existed. They didn't and the rest is history!

HOT NEWS!

Facebook shocks with EPL capture

Analysts expect imminent TV industry upheaval with £200 million deal
Published: 7/07/2018 at 04:00 AM
Newspaper section: Business https://www.bangkokpost.com/business/ne ... pl-capture

Facebook's astonishing £200 million (8.78 billion baht) deal for English Premier League football broadcasts will change the entire industry for digital and pay TV in Thailand in the near future, say media analysts.

The world's most powerful social media platform just clinched the deal, acquiring streaming rights to broadcast all 380 Premier League matches for the 2019-2020 season. Facebook plans to broadcast in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

Thai media analysts said Facebook's strong move will make it a giant rival of digital TV and pay-TV operators and it will finally become a TV station.

Mana Treelayapewat, dean of the school of communication arts at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, said Facebook allows users, including major digital TV operators, to broadcast their content for free of charge and Facebook recently asked Thai digital TV operators to co-produce content running on its platform.

"Obviously Facebook is going to beat up digital TV and pay-TV operators by acquiring the streaming rights to these popular football matches," said Mr Mana.

Facebook has been very successful in advertising on its application and will be able to earn more revenue with this strategy.

BeIN Sports has the exclusive rights to broadcast English Premier League football matches. TrueVisions has secured an exclusive sub-licence from BeIN Sports to broadcast in Thailand for three years from 2016.

Mr Mana said that the move was worrying for Thailand's media industry because another giant search engine platform, Google, is expected to launch a new feature to compete with Facebook, probably by using YouTube as a content broadcaster.

All of these are disruptive technologies threatening Thailand's media industry.

He said mass media in Thailand has been mainly digital TV, but Facebook and Google have increasingly dominated the market, severely disrupting the industry as more audiences shift to online platforms.

This includes the way ad agencies redefine their media spending because Facebook and Google can show audience statistics more precisely, which makes agencies' work easier.

"Audiences and ad sponsors are expected to fade away from the traditional TV platform because online media can show more accurate data in terms of insights and statistics," he said.

On the other hand, Time Chuastapanasiri, a media analyst, said Facebook does not only beat digital TV industry but every platform in the country, cable and satellite TV, pay-TV and it will totally change traditional TV consumption.

Facebook Live expanded into Thai TV industry with features that are convenient for users, broadcasting content through smartphones without the need to invest in additional equipment has lured viewership during primetime.

"Facebook will probably become the main TV station in Thailand's the future, by digital TV operators being tools or content provider," said Mr Time.

If Facebook Live becomes a TV station, the digital TV industry will be seriously impacted, he said.

Siwat Chawareewong, chief executive of advertising media company Group M, said that it is not surprising that Facebook has entered the live sport broadcast arena as it has a strong audience base.

The EPL rights owner, however, gave broadcasting licences to other media channels as well.

Mr Siwat said it will no longer divide traditional broadcasting from online because content makers want to distribute their content on every single channel.

"This is the age of multi-screens, by which content will become more personalised and segmented," he said, adding that football fans still have the option to watch their favourite team on big TV screens, smart TVs, or mobile phones.

Advertisers and brands will spend money on platforms and content that have strong viewership, Mr Siwat said.

Jarit Sidhu, head of operations at research firm IDC Thailand, said Facebook's move is interesting as it is attempting to have its own content in live sport streaming, similar to Amazon Prime.

Content providers will move to build their own platforms, particularly movie content, similar to Disney, Netflix or other subscription video-on-demand players. Sports content is the only arena where there is no dominant player in the online platform.

However, unlike Facebook, Amazon Prime has a subscription model that can earn money.

"We have to see if Facebook's revenue model is free with sponsorship and advertising or is subscription-based," said Mr Jarit.

Mr Jarit said Facebook needs to prepare reliable streaming quality to satisfy users.

Luckily in my small part of North Africa I have been able to watch the Premiership match of my choice on BeIN one sport, it could be in English, Arabic, French, Spanish or German. But who cares about the language. It does cost me about £30 a year though (including BBC,ITV, and a a host of English speaking channels)
