New to Hua Hin Forum

Post by dennism53 »

Greetings from the US.

I have been traveling to LOS for many years and have been married to an Issan girl for just about 10 years living in the US (Kansas and Nevada).
I am getting ready to retire and we've chosen Hua Hin area, most likely to the south for our home. I am anticipating a November trip and was wondering if there are any expat meeting groups in the city?
I look forward to meeting many of you when I establish myself in the area!

not too many Americans here. More like UK EU AU types. I know they are speaking English but different somehow. :) To fit in here you will need a polo shirt that has Manchester United printed on it. Whatever that means.

I am from L.A. I am not sure about groups because I am anti social. but i understand people get together to do stuff. like ride bikes, walk, hike, motorcycles... golf. If you can hang out in bars, you will meet some SAS and MI6 agents.

Another newbie here. Spent six weeks in Hua Hin last year and been on holidays and travelled in Thailand quite a few times in the last five years. My partner who is Thai is moving to Hua Hin in Sept/Oct this year and I am joining her. Been living in Scotland for last 29 years, great place but weather is so unpredictable. Been reading the forum since last year and thought now is a good time to join as it is very informative and seems a good place to start to fully understand the different aspects of expat life.

Hello,

I am new to the forum as well. I'm from the US ?(California) and my daughter & her boyfriend are visiting Thailand backpacking for 2 months. My daughter says I would love it so I've been doing some research. I've just read there are mostly UK & Australians in this part of Thailand. Is there a more 'American' area or is this area accepting of those from the U.S.? From what I've read I think this area offers most of what I'm looking for. Thank you for any inside info.

Hi Sunny

My Thai wife and I also live in California (Orange County) and have been going to Hua Hin for many years.

Some residents may have better info but I don't believe an American area exists. Perhaps Hangouts (bars) that Americans congregate at (we don't really go to the bars).

Have met some nice Americans as well as those from other countries.

Go visit, you won't regret it!

Thank you! I'm up the coast from you in Santa Barbara. I love the ocean but these California prices are taking a toll. I'm enjoying the updates from my daughter as she travels around but she knows I'm waiting fir the beach area update the most. I do plan to visit and have some Thai friends here In SB but have only recently considered a move.

i am from Hollywood, CA.

there are no "American" places to hang out in Hua Hin. no bar that i know of. but Americans don't really do the bar or pub thing. more like a drink before dinner.

big UK and EU influence, which is good. there are Americans here but they keep a very low profile. Every small American owned business that i know of in hua hin has no hint of American ownership. No flags, no signs, nothing. the UK and EU businesses are quick to fly a flag from their home country.

Remember there are Soviets, sorry Russians, Communist Chinese and Muslims from down south sitting next to you at dinner. I have no problem hanging out with the sworn enemies of the USA. Sort of fun really. better than a Bond movie.

I just smile when i see Chinese tourists wearing Harley Davidson tee shirts.

Welcome everybody.

I must be living in a different world because I seen to be surrounded by Swedish couples rather than Brits and etc. To be honest, I actually enjoy living between such a wide mix of nationalities. There are a number of reasons for this, but one is that it demonstrates just how easily different nationalities can live together without conflict.

My advice would be that you shouldn't bother too much about finding only fellow Americans when you move here. Just make friends regardless of their nationalities.

Ignore the comments about SAS and MI6 personnel. I've never met any and I've been in Thailand for nearly two decades already. Also, just ignore comments on some threads which proclaim that most expats here are shady characters or criminals on the run.

Best of luck.

Thank you! I'm glad it sounds like Americans aren't shunned or undesirable to socialize with I suppose (although there are always obnoxious people in the world).

The only thing that counts here is your money - sure we torture peeps, start wars, let Israel run our foreign policy and throw our weight around - but no farang asks to see your passport, so say you’re Canadian.

Been living in HH for about 5 months now. There are are quite a wide variety of nationalities here. Less Aussies than I thought there would be. When we first arrived in early Feb, there were Scandinavians everywhere but they seem to head home for their summer. I've met and socialised with a few from the USA in bars, so they are definitely here. Plenty of Brits, Germans, French, and of course Chinese, and everyone's favourite, the Russians. Came here with an open mind about Russians after reading some negative comments about them. Now I can probably see how those types of comments came about. Must be holidays in Russia at the moment, as there are plenty of families with school aged kids here in our complex. They are certainly different and hard to get a read on at times. But I have met some nice ones. Certainly like the United Nations here in HH, but it makes for a good mix and interesting times....enjoy!
