I think there are good, and bad, doctors everywhere. After my first (of eventually 3) shoulder operations in the states, and at a highly rated hospital, I was still having serious problems. By this time I was living in a different state so went to a shoulder expert there. He examined me, the records he received from the first doctor, and basically told me the first doctor did it wrong and this is what will cause problems from this point on. He was correct that even after the 3 ops, and 15 years, I still have limitations, and pain, in the shoulder. The first doctor was also supposed to be a shoulder specialist too.

As we have seen here there are both good, and bad, experiences. I guess the patients best bet is to get a second opinion and try to research the doctors that you work with, even this may not be enough and, as said above, may be up to just a random chance.
The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.

At these prices, I'm happy to forgo health insurance, which would have cost me much, much more in premiums. They probably wouldn't want my business anyway, since I'm 78.
Yes, I think starting new health cover at your age is impossible, so I wish you very good health and a long life, Jim. But of course a 60,000 baht operation isn't a reason for others not to get cover.

I know you were only talking about your own situation and not suggesting others do the same, but I keep wanting to warn people about the dangers of not insuring at least their health, and for them to try to scratch up the money even if it's difficult. To self-insure, how long will it take for them to build up at least a couple of million Baht for any potential medical emergency with ongoing complications.

"A British man in northern Thailand who is in urgent need of a major heart operation has been trolled and received death threats after posting a video on YouTube.

Graham Briar, who has lived in Thailand for more than a decade, is currently in a hospital in Chiang Rai having been told he needs a triple heart bypass.

However, because he does not have health insurance or the minimum 500,000 baht that doctors have told him the surgery will cost, he is at risk of being sent home with receiving the urgent medical treatment he requires.

... people commenting also questioned his decision to live in Thailand without valid health insurance.

Graham has since put the fact of him not having health insurance to “just one of those things”.

I'm in the same boat due to my age. It was being said a while ago that tourists would have to prove they had insurance before being admitted into the country. My mother comes for 3 months every year. She'll have her 93rd birthday here this year. She's not been able to get insurance for some years now, and she really has tried.

If I could get health cover, I would. People tell me I'm stupid for not having cover, but nobody has given me a solution.

I have an "accident" policy from Bangkok Bank. It is around 5k Baht for 60k cover. Not much, but I have to wonder if this would satisfy the proposed government threat? At least, if I am involved in an accident the hospitals should not refuse admittance.

I also cannot get local cover because of age and pre-existing conditions. I do maintain private cover in Australia, but of course, I would have to get there to use it.
May you be in heaven half an hour before the devil know`s you`re dead!

It's the same for most countries now; you have to have health insurance to get a visa. Soon only the wealthy will be able to travel, which is probably what most govts. want. Keep out the backpackers.

Backpackers tend to be relatively young and therefore don't generally have problems getting medical insurance.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I meant that most govts. only want the wealthy tourists who spend money and generally don't cause problems. Bhutan is a perfect example.
