Limits on Express / VIP service at HH Hospital?

Post by Homer »

Are there any medical problems (e.g., is this a melanoma?) or categories of problems (dermatology) where the express service people say 'you can't do that here - go take a number' (with the unsaid being 'and wait alllll day').

Just to be clear, my question has nothing to do with melanomas or dermatology. Those are examples of problems and categories of problems.

I use the service quite regularly, and they have tried to make me use the 'regular' service when I have no appointment/regular doctor is not available. However, I've always stood my ground, and they've got me sorted.

I had a friend who had a mental health issue, and because all mental health patients are treated as Express anyway, he needed to queue with everybody else - actually, he didn't queue, and we had to find him an expensive alternative.

I'm sure there may be other departments with a similar policy.

Quite some months ago I was having some waterworks problems and was advised to get an Ultrasound Bladder Scan. On presenting myself at the express office and explaining my needs, the older dark haired Nurse/Assistant informed me. '' You can't have that done here, we don't have a Urology Department'' and sent me on my way.

Hmmmm......... she's the one who has tried to tell me no in the past. She's also had a few run ins with Mrs BB as well, normally because I always turn up early. However, we have to be early to get parked.

Having said that, a Urology Department does seem to be lacking anywhere in Hua Hin.

Using the OP's example, some months ago I was worried about a skin cancer. Went to the express service and was taken straight to the dermatologist. No problem.
Incidentally, it was an 'all clear'. I was in and out of the hospital within the hour.

I should have also said in the original post that I am also registered at Bangkok Hospital near MV so I took myself off to see them. In and out within the hour with an ''All Clear''. Quite a few Baht lighter but worth it under the circumstances.

I don't know if your example is recent, but when checking out the Urology capabilities in Hua Hin on Google, Bangkok Hospital did not get a good review.

Hi BB,
It was about 12 months ago. They didn't really have to do much with/to me apart from rub some jelly on my belly and take a picture of the resulting scan for the Doctor to see. Couldn't fault the service I got.

That's fine - I worry about BKK Hospital taking on work they don't have the right experience/facilities for. My wife has been on the receiving end. Glad it worked out for you.

I've heard several stories regarding BKK Hospital. Often taking your cash then referring you elsewhere because they don't have the relevant equipment.

When my son left for the UK, he obtained several months supply of his medication as he'd always been treated by BKK Hospital. When he showed the medicines to his doctor in the UK, it was immediately thrown in the bin. His doctor said that not only was it dangerous, it was probably the cause of his problems! Since stopping the meds, he's as 'right as rain'. (Wish I could get a refund --- it wasn't cheap!)

i had a partial prostectomy at Bangkok hospital. the doctor told me he had done thousands of them. after the operation, that he screwed-up, I found out that he was 32 yrs. old and only 3 yrs. out of med school in chiang mai. I went through hell. fortunately he went to Bangkok because I wanted to kill him or, at the least, beat him to a bloody pulp. the nephrology doctor is also useless. I haven't been back.

That explains it. Thanks. Last year, the first time I ever visited, I had express service going through registration. Received an appointment for the next day when I also had express service. Recently I went in with a minor injury (but one which I'm sure BKK Hospital would have found reason to do a boat load of unnecessary tests and prescribe thousands of baht worth of meds) and no appointment. So I waited. Next time I'll either have an appointment, stand my ground or both.

It can also be an advantage to go mid-afternoon. There is an afternoon surgery, similar to a GP surgery in the UK. My son and visitors have used it (not the Express Clinic) - very fast, including X-rays as well. Not expensive.

Didn't get express service today, despite having an appointment to see a orthopedic specialist. After finishing, had a 3-way conversation with one of the underlings from the express service office and the guy who handles complaints/patient relations. According to them, seeing an Orthopedic or EENT specialist doesn't get express service because of the hospital's arrangement with those docs. Going mid afternoon may work for seeing a GP, but if you need to see a specialist better be there early because some only work until noon or thereabouts.

I guess that's the same for mental health then.
