My experience is that a prescription is not necessary. So long as you know what you need, you simply buy it at a pharmacy. Obviously cost will depend on what it is that you need.

I know it is not within the range of meds the OP asked about but I AM having to pay for 'prescription' drugs. I have to take an immune suppressant for an autoimmune condition. Blood tests every 6 months minimum are needed to check white cell levels and state of play within body. I can only get 3 months meds and NOT without written Doctor's letter. I tried to buy independently but no dice anywhere.
I find it reassuring that they not only understand a fairly unusual disease but also take the dispensing of certain meds seriously. Ok, it costs more for me because, so far, I think I can only use the prescription at the issuing hospital's pharmacy.
Never mind, was apprehensive about waving "goodbye" to top consultant, at Kings College London, and taking my chances moving here.
Incidently, I have been told if I email blood tests to London I will get second opinion on results. This is NHS but I had built a good relationship with the consultant over 12 years of visits.
Sorry to digress but it seemed relevant to the topic heading.

No doubt you are correct in that some drugs will only be sold with a doctor's prescription. Unfortunately, what can and cannot be sold over the counter without a prescription will, to some extent, vary from pharmacy to pharmacy. Drugs like Simvastatin, which the OP referred to, can normally be sold direct, though obviously the 'patient' would be well advised to have regular checks to make sure that the dose is appropriate. Best to keep some samples of the drugs you're taking in your home country and show them to a chemist.

Most drugs prescribed by a doctor can be purchased anywhere (usually - some might not be stocked at local pharmacies). Simply take the prescription to an external pharmacy instead of the one at the hospital. Without asking if it's okay to do so.
This is the way

D-M, Thanks for that suggestion. I appreciate the hospital want to make it appear as though it all has to be done 'in-house'. I was glad to collect the meds and arrange future blood test with them. Subsequently, In the necessary interest of long term economy, I will try the alternative. I had checked prices prior to going there and they were not inflating the cost too much.

I don't know what hospital you're talking about, but my wife needs some fairly specialised medication. Bangkok Hospital here in Hua Hin sold her the first batch (and told her that it was prescription only). We purchased exactly the same drug in Bangkok for 1/13th of the cost - no prescription. My only experience about hospital pharmacies is Bangkok Hospital, and they are definitely over-priced.

yes, I've written on another thread that we have found the pharmacies in G Supermarkets to be OK. They might not have what you need on the shelf, but they will order, and you will have it within 8 hours - I don't get subjected to Thai/Farang pricing.

Once they know you are a regular you can get discounts from the pharmacy on Phetkasem road about a block north of the old Hua Hin Shopping Mall but you have to ask. I still get much deeper discounts on some expensive meds I have to take for asthma at South East wholesale Pharmacy in Bangkok. We go up there for a break at least 3 times a year anyway so I just stock up while I'm there.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Well, you can buy antibiotics in the pharmacy without any prescription as long as you know what king of antibiotics to need. If not, you need to consult a healthcare professional about this matter. You need to take the antibiotics for 7 days.
