From the Bangkok Post. Appears to be a useful application. Pete

Click to speak Thai
WANDA SLOAN

Just find the letter, digit or symbol you need from the virtual keyboard, and click. The Unikode utility allows you to type Thai even if your Windows computer hasn't been set up for the language.

This week's featured utility will probably be of more use to people outside Thailand, although some folks here may also want to install and keep it.

The purpose of Unikode, by an anonymous webmaster in France, is to provide a "point and shoot" solution for people who really, really need a bit of Thai language, even though their computers aren't Thai-ready.

Back in the old days of 16-bit, dot-matrix computing, it was necessary to have all kinds of extra hardware and software just to make the PC speak a bit of Thai.

Windows XP speaks Thai quite well, but many people don't set up the background processes that are necessary for East Asian languages.

Unikode is a small (500KB download), standalone utility that you can call up in those moments when you have to put just a phrase or sentence into Thai.

It could also be quite useful to people just beginning to learn to read and write Thai, since the setup of the display is alphabetical rather than by they Thai-language keyboard.

But I have a suspicion that Unikode may prove to be more useful to those who feed the powerful Post Database addiction with the Internet addiction, from abroad. For them, particularly those who have lost the Windows installation CD, Unikode can write Thai in almost any Windows application - Microsoft Word, a web page editor or, as seen here, Notepad. And it will write Thai as fast as you can click.

Unikode and an expandable Thai-English-Thai dictionary called Pout-Thai are available at mog.software.free.fr. Press Esc to stop the music.
