To be honest Mr L, most, if not all, I've seen/used are still fairly crap. Even with the best ones you are still making guesses for sure. Sometimes I find a new one and try it out in the Nordic section, Norseman usually tells me it's crap and better luck next time and that's with European languages. These software application just can't pick up the subtle nuances etc that native speakers use, at least not yet anyhow. Only thing to do is to translate something and then copy what it gives you, then reverse the language 'from/to' translation settings, then paste what it gave you before and translate it back to English. If it come back as exactly what you wrote originally then you have a chance. This is by no means reliable. Top and tail of it is, IMO, the software just isn't good enough yet but will give you a vague idea.

Google translate has been one of the best ones I've used (certainly for Chinese), but as Spitfire says with regards to translation software, still far from perfect.

So what do you think of the above sentences? Proper English?
Is Google Translate good enough?

No, it's not.
However, it's a help and support program, but if you want to write, in lets say English, then make a translation to Finnish or German, it will not work.
Yet.
After all, if the receiver doesn't understand what you have to say, then I'd say more work is needed to make the programs better.
A few more years development will do the trick.

I do manage to talk with my grand daughters using Google Translate. It's not perfect, but it does the job.

I know what you're saying Norseman (and I don't want anybody taking this the wrong way - it is not malicious); but it is no worse than those who post on the main forum when English is not their first language.

I really respect those of you who are fluent in several languages, and Google Translate (or similar) gives us thickies who only speak one language a chance to see what's going on. The problem comes when we want to join in. All that I ask is the same tolerance be given as most of us give to users on the main forum.

Having said the above, people have always been tolerant with me when I've dabbled in the other forums.

The thing I find about Google Translate,is that it does have some idea of idiom. There are phreases you can type in word by word and get gibberish,put put in the whole thing and it quite magically gets it right. Not good for complex sentences, but then what is?
